MECHANICAL COMPONENTS
AND MAINTENANCE
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

WHAT IS BEARING?
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

WHAT IS BEARING?
 A bearing is a machine element that supports a
part—such as a shaft—that rotates, slides, or
oscillates in or on it.

 Anti-friction
devices, permit smooth, low-friction
movement between two or more surfaces.

CHAPTER 4: BEARING

WHY BEARINGS ARE IMPORTANT

IN MECHANICAL DEVICES?

Bearings: to reduce • Improve efficiency

FRICTION
• Reduce wear (improve lifespan)

• to facilitate extended use at

high speeds

• avoid overheating and

premature failure
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

APPLICATIONS OF BEARING
 Bearings are found in applications ranging from
automobiles, airplanes, computers, construction
equipment, machine tools, DVD players,
refrigerators and ceiling fans.

 Ifsomething twists, turns or moves, it probably

has a bearing in it.

• also are referred to as fluid-film bearings or journal or

sleeve bearings.

• Plain bearings are available in a wide variety of types or

styles and may be self-contained units or built into a
machine assembly.
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
PLAIN BEARING

• Plain bearings are dependent on maintaining an adequate

lubricant film to prevent the bearing and shaft surfaces
from coming into contact, which is necessary to prevent
premature bearing failure.
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
PLAIN BEARING

• Plain bearings are often subject to high stress due to high

speeds, oscillating movement or extreme temperatures.
These high requirements call for an outstanding
lubrication solution.

PLAIN BEARING

• Types of Plain Bearing:

• Thrust/ Fixed bearing

Thrust bearings are designed specifically to manage

heavy thrust loads and provide high-shock-load
resistance for maximum bearing life and load
capacity.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
PLAIN BEARING

• Types of Plain Bearing:

• Thrust/ Fixed bearing

Thrust bearings absorb axial loads from rotating

shafts into the stationary housings or mounts in
which they are turning. Axial loads are those
transmitted linearly along the shaft.

• Types of Plain Bearing:

• Thrust/ Fixed bearing
Good examples of axial loads are the forward thrust on boats
or prop-driven airplanes as a result of their propeller's rapid
rotation. Thrust bearings are also used in power drills, where
the user puts their weight into a rotating bit to drill through
tough materials. Merry-go-rounds have massive thrust
bearings to support all the rotating weight.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
PLAIN BEARING

• Types of Plain Bearing:

• Journal bearing

• also known as sleeve or Babbit bearing

• Journal or plain bearings consist of a shaft or journal which

rotates freely in a supporting metal sleeve or shell.

• There are no rolling elements in these bearings

• Industrial machinery with high horsepower and high loads,

such as steam turbines, centrifugal compressors, pumps and
motors, utilize journal bearings as rotor supports.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
ROLLING BEARING

• Rolling a.k.a Anti-friction bearings are based on rolling

motion as opposed to the sliding motion of plain
bearings.

• The use of rolling elements (balls or rollers) between

rotating and stationary surfaces reduces the friction.
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
ROLLING BEARING

• They support both radial and axial loads and are

generally used in moderate- to high-speed applications.

• Unlike fluid-film plain bearings, rolling element

bearings have the added ability to carry the full load of
the rotor assembly at any speed.
CHAPTER 4: BEARING

CLASSIFICATIONS OF BEARING
ROLLING BEARING

• Where fluid-film bearings must have turning gear to

support the rotor’s weight at low speeds, rolling element
bearings can maintain the proper shaft centerline
through the entire speed range of the machine.
