Length of Spiral

based on AASHTO explaination

What is Ls Desirable?
Table 3-19 (adopted by ATJ
1) Ls Desirable is spiral length that most of the driver
8/86(Pindaan 2015) as Table 4.8)
comfortable to manoeuvre without encroaching to
the other lane.
2) It can be achieve in 2 seconds, a natural comfortable
manoeuvre for most drivers.
3) “Spiral curve lengths longer than those shown in
Table 3-19 may be needed at turning roadway
terminals to adequately develop the desired
superelevation. Specifically, spirals twice as long as
those shown in Table 3-19 may be needed in such
situations.” in other words, superelevation attainment
(superelevation runoff) is governed here.
Ls Min Ls Desirable Ls Max
In Conclusion, the idea to use superelevation runoff
length equal to length of spiral is not contradict with
AASHTO Guidelines. In fact, it is recommended to do
so.
