I’m J-Hun. Today, we are going to have a practical tutorial. The


words and phrases which you will learn today would help you
boost your IELTS scores to over 8.0.
IELTS The topics in our speaking classes will be in the Official IELTS

In today’s lesson, we are going to learn some words and phrases about
book. Through the slides, you should follow the instructions, including
pausing the video, using your paper, pens or pencils, even your gadgets to
take notes or do some activities here.
While learning new words, you should listen and repeat after me.

1. Listen and repeat;
1. Protagonist
Definition: the main character as a hero in a film, play, book, etc.
Example: He starred in the film as a protagonist
2. Antagonist
Definition: it opposes the protagonist, as villain/baddy / bad person.
Example: She made her reputation playing antagonists of some plays.
3. Plot

Vocabulary Definition: storyline of the book, film or play


Example: The plot of the book attracted me more than the others.

Book 4. Blurb
Definition: a short description of a book, film written by authors, on the back of the book or film, without any
ending.
Example; She was browsing through the blurbs of the books.
5. Synopsis (synopses plural)
Definition: a 200-word short description of the full story
Example; I didn’t have time to read all, so I had to find their synopses
6. bibliophile
Definition: a person who loves reading or collecting books.
Example; I am a bibliophile, possessing hundreds of books in my bookshelf.
7. Adaptation

Definition: a film, play or book which is made from another film, play or book,
Example; He played in the film adaptation of Mark Twain’s book.

Definition: a way of criticizing people in a humorous way

11. setting
Definition: time and place in which the action of a book , film or a play happens.
Example; The setting of the film is in London ,1942.
12. Genre
Definition: style of a film, book, etc
Example; I have 2 favorite genres- comedy and tragedy.
13. A twist
Definition: unexpected ending of the film or story
Example; The story ends up with a twist; Professor Hopkins was jailed.
14. A playwright/ dramatist
Definition: a person who writes plays
Example; William Shakespeare is a worldwide playwright. NEXT

Definition: look through a book or magazine without reading everything;
Example: I browsed the blurbs of many books but bought two of them.
9. Hilarious
Definition: extremely funny and causing a lot of laughter
Example: It was a hilarious story.

Vocabulary Definition: to read something from the beginning to the end

Book
Example: I have read Chris Gardner’s memoirs cover to cover. .
11. I can’t put it down
Definition: so exciting that you can’t stop reading.
Example; It was so exciting that I couldn’t put it down.
12. To flip through
Definition: to look at the pages of the book or magazines quickly (browsing )
Example; While flipping through the books, I found his touching memoirs.
13. engrossing/ gripping
Definition: so exciting that hold your attention completely
Example; The story was so engrossing that I was completely gripped.
14. touching

Definition: making you feel sadness , sympathy for something or somebody
Example; I read all his touching stories; I had sympathy for his childhood.

Though no 1. __________ myself, I’m into reading limited number of genres such as biographies and

1. How often do you go to bookshops?

I wouldn’t say I’m a bibliophile, but at least twice a month. I browse the blurbs of the books and flip

through the pages at bookshops. Truly speaking, it gives pleasure.

2. Do you like comedy genre?

I’m keen on comedy genre, with hilarious scenes, however, I would prefer read these stories through

satires. In my opinion, satires are useful to societies to improve their behaviors.

3. Do you like reading?

Sample Do I like reading?- I do love reading, especially touching memoirs, which have adaptations. I’m into

engrossing biographies too. I feel like I am able to value my time while reading them.

4. While choosing a book for a child, what should be considered?

Obviously, the message in the book. In other words, children are vulnerable to the messages through

the illustrations and stories. I personally take into consideration the messages sent by the protagonists

and antagonists of the book.
