 What is a phlebotomy

Phlebotomy : is a technique in which a needle is

temporarily inserted into a vein to provide
  .venous access for venous blood sampling
 Purpose

Phlebotomy is used to remove blood from the

body during blood donation and for analysis of
.the substances contained within it
 complication
Hematoma
Pain
Infection
Equipment
 PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURE
The following are steps that should be followed
.to collect a standard blood sample
 Identify the patient .1
.Double check the requisition order .2:
.Wash your hands .3
.Put on gloves .5
 PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURE
Determine which arm you will be drawing .6
your sample from. You can decide or you can let
the patient decide.
Then tie the tourniquet 2 inches to 3 inches
. above the puncture site
 PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURE
Disinfect the area surrounding the puncture .7
.site with an alcohol wipe
Remove the tourniquet until you are ready to .8
.draw the sample
 PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURE
Make sure the bevel of the needle is pointing .9

Place a tube from your tray into the hub and .10
check for blood flow. Let the tube fill. Once it is
.filled remove it from the tube holder
 PHLEBOTOMY PROCEDURE
Once the last tube has filled it is time to release .11
the tourniquet. After the tourniquet has been

.remove the tube and then the needle
Have gauze ready in opposite hand and apply it .12
