HOW TO TREAT ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY
DISORDER
ADHD cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. Treatment for this condition is generally done with a
combination of psychotherapy and drug administration. In adults treatment includes medication,
education, skills training, and psychological counseling.
⋆ Some types of psychotherapy that can be given are as follows
1. Psychoeducation:
During psychoeducation, patients will gain knowledge about ADHD and its effects. This can help the
patient cope with the possible repercussions and live a normal life with the condition.
2. Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral therapy usually consists of behavior management, which uses a reward and punishment
system to encourage children to control behavior. For example, suppose you want to train yourself to be
able to sit at the dining table calmly. So when successful in carrying out the requested activity, the child
will get a prize. Conversely, when they fail, children will get punishment
3. Social Skills Training
Social skills training involves the patient taking part in role play situations. This training aims to teach
how to behave in certain social situations and provide an understanding of the impact on others.
4. Cognitive behavioral therapy
Cognitive behavior therapy or cognitive based therapy (CBT) is speech therapy that can help patients
manage problems by changing how they think and behave. 5
