THE ROLE OF CURRICULUM

Curriculum is a crucial factor in teaching and


learning process.
It means a written plan(a degree program, a
syllabus, a textbook, a teaching package, a
lesson) which is prescriptive. Based of
Dewey's’(1916) Definition.. As all the
experiences of the learner inside and outside
the school under the guidance of a teacher is
all encompassing.

• Written plan is specific and prescriptive. It
indicates:
Objectives.
Defines the scope sequence of content.
Identifies strategies and activities or learning.
Selects materials and methods.
Describes the role of the learner and the teacher.
 Includes all learning experiences that may not be
specifically written but supervised by the School.
Phases of Curriculum Development
• This refers to the process that produces the
written plan.
 Curriculum design and structure.
 The implementation scheme.
 The Evaluation procedure.
Areas of concern in Curriculum Development
• Shared philosophy, beliefs, behavoiurs, norms
and rules of the Kenyan Society.
• Knowledge of the nature of the learner in
terms of development level, learning style,
normative needs and other philosophical and
Psychological concerns.
• Knowledge of Teaching-learning theories and
principles.
• Different domains of knowledge (cognitive,
affective, psychomotor).
