Background
Timber flooring is a popular building element in
Australia and represents around 25% of the flooring
market.

Executive summary
Solid timber is well loved The top decision making factors There is a strong aesthetic
among both consumers and for specifiers revolve around preference for Australian
specifiers but has some durability, maintenance and hardwood timbers, standard
significant weaknesses aesthetics. For consumers grade and wider boards among
limiting its uptake including durability is also key as is easy consumers
installed cost, skills shortage to clean and value

These weaknesses are considerable margin and have a resilience, refinishing and
contributing to increased huge influence on consumer durability

Setting the scene
Material consideration and usage
10
Among consumers the top tier materials considered and used are carpet, tiles, vinyl
and laminate i.e. products that are traditionally cheaper than timber
While timber products collectively rival top materials, individually they have a poorer
conversion rate from consideration to purchase
A1. Which flooring materials/surfaces did you consider when you recently purchased/installed flooring? A2. Which flooring material/surface(s) did you end up purchasing/installing? Base: Consumers n=500 11
Among specifiers tiles, concrete, carpet and solid strip timber are the top tier
materials in terms of consideration and usage; Overall timber products are neck and
neck with tiles
Specifiers are far more receptive to solid strip timber than engineered and solid overlay; Solid
strip has no real conversion issues among specifiers
A2. In the last 12 months which of the following flooring materials/surfaces have you considered for a project? A4 - In the last 12 months which flooring materials/surfaces have you specified or installed for a
project? Base: Building specifiers n=379 *In the last 12 months 12
There is near unanimous agreement that engineered timber concrete and bamboo are being
used more than 5 years ago; Solid overlay is also being used more while solid strip appears
to be more or less consistent with 5 years ago

Customer journey
What is the path to purchase for
consumers?
26
When it comes to flooring decisions consumers are heavily influenced by flooring
retailers and their staff; This is a big obstacle for timber with many large retailers
not stocking any solid products
How can the industry incentivise retailers to push timber? With timber prices currently so out
of sync with consumer expectations it’s a hard sell
A3. Which of the following did you do before you purchased/installed flooring? A3a. And which of these was most influential in determining your final choice of flooring material/surface? Base: Consumers n=500 27

Overseas flooring trends: In the US solid wood flooring is the dominant wood
product while in Europe engineered accounts for 90% of wood flooring; In both
markets engineered timber is on the rise, as is the case in Australia
UNITED STATES
• Wood flooring dominated by solid wood which accounts for 75%
• American home owners prefer oak wood flooring (mostly red oak)
• Increasing demand for trendy, authentic hardwood flooring products
• Engineered products gaining traction amidst reduced consumer spending
• Increasing consumer interest in ‘green buildings’ and increasing pressure on businesses to
demonstrate sustainability is expected to increase wood demand
• Carpets and rugs are on the wane due to rising awareness of health effects, currently the
most popular flooring option but losing share to wood
• Availability of extra durable engineered wood is driving sales
• Innovations have turned installation from a complex task into a simple one and driven
growth
• Solid wood flooring dominance expected to continue
EUROPE
• Preference for engineered wood flooring as it is considered stable, versatile and resistant to
atmospheric moisture and allow for under floor heating
• Engineered wood accounts for 90% of wood products while solid wood accounts for only
10%
• Environmental regulations and certification programs gaining prominence coupled with
rising social awareness
