Background
Timber flooring is a popular building element in
Australia and represents around 25% of the flooring
market.

Natural timber flooring has a range of benefits in

addition to its obvious aesthetic qualities. These
include energy efficiency, environmental
sustainability, natural warmth and design life, under
an appropriate maintenance regime.

Despite these compelling benefits there is a reported

movement away from solid timber flooring in recent
years.

Research to explore the drivers of flooring

choice and identify unique marketing points to
support a planned species promotion campaign

Business objectives Research objectives

Increase the use of • Understand the drivers of flooring choice

timber flooring  among consumers
• Identify the strengths and weaknesses of
various flooring types (timber based and
competitor)
• Identify the timber flooring messages that
resonate most with consumers

Executive summary

Solid timber is well loved The top decision making factors There is a strong aesthetic
among both consumers and for specifiers revolve around preference for Australian
specifiers but has some durability, maintenance and hardwood timbers, standard
significant weaknesses aesthetics. For consumers grade and wider boards among
limiting its uptake including durability is also key as is easy consumers
installed cost, skills shortage to clean and value
and perceived maintenance Both audiences are receptive
requirements Flooring retailers are the top to a range of timber messages
purchase channel by a including fashion/trend
These weaknesses are considerable margin and have a resilience, refinishing and
contributing to increased huge influence on consumer durability

Overseas flooring trends: In the US solid wood flooring is the dominant wood
product while in Europe engineered accounts for 90% of wood flooring; In both
markets engineered timber is on the rise, as is the case in Australia

UNITED STATES
• Wood flooring dominated by solid wood which accounts for 75%
• American home owners prefer oak wood flooring (mostly red oak)
• Increasing demand for trendy, authentic hardwood flooring products
• Engineered products gaining traction amidst reduced consumer spending
• Increasing consumer interest in ‘green buildings’ and increasing pressure on businesses to
demonstrate sustainability is expected to increase wood demand
• Carpets and rugs are on the wane due to rising awareness of health effects, currently the
most popular flooring option but losing share to wood
• Availability of extra durable engineered wood is driving sales
• Innovations have turned installation from a complex task into a simple one and driven
growth
• Solid wood flooring dominance expected to continue
EUROPE
• Preference for engineered wood flooring as it is considered stable, versatile and resistant to
atmospheric moisture and allow for under floor heating
• Engineered wood accounts for 90% of wood products while solid wood accounts for only
10%
• Environmental regulations and certification programs gaining prominence coupled with
rising social awareness
