Culture And Philosophy During Abbasid Period
 
ABBASID PERIOD

Abbasid Caliphate was a major dynasty that ruled over the


Islamic Empire during its peak. This period was called the
Golden Age of Islam. The early part of the Abbasid rule was a
time of peace and prosperity. Great advances were made in
many areas of science, mathematics, and medicine. Schools
of higher education and libraries were built throughout the
empire. The culture flourished as Arabic art and architecture
reached new heights.
EDUCATION

• During the Abbasids, the contributions of education


was very significant as the child’s education started at
home. At the age of six, boys were admitted into
schools.
• The schools were held in mosques, in private houses
and sometimes in teacher’s own house. Besides the
mosques, there were Maktabs which served as
elementary schools. The curriculum of the elementary
school consisted of reading, writing and grammar.

• Advanced scholars engaged themselves in the


study of Astronomy, Philosophy, Geometry,
Music and Medicine.
• Co-education was the norm during the
Abbasid period.
Science

During The Abbasid Period Muslims Were Scientifically


Advanced Civilization Between The Seventh And Eleventh
Century.
Muslim Scholars Made Great Advances In Algebra,
Geometry, Optics, Cosmology, Alchemy (The Beginning Of
Modern Chemistry), Natural History, Astronomy, Medicine,
Geography, Technology And Philosophy.
Notable Achievements Are In The Field Of Chemistry And
Physics As Muslim Chemist Jabir Discovered Nitric Acid
And Developed The Process Of Distillation, Sublimation,
Filtration, And Crystallization.
Ibn AL Haytham “Father Of Optics” Explained How Human
Vision Takes Place. He Used An Early Form Of The
Scientific Method To Explain Optics.
 
Art and culture
During The Abbasid Period A Destinctive Style
Emerged And New Techniques Were Developed
That Spread Throughout The Muslim Realm And
Greatly Influenced The Islamic Art And
Architecture.
Some Of The Most Beautiful And Highly Carved
Buildings Were Made By The Decoration Of
Different Verses And Visual Arts.
Calligraphy Was Started From Qalam. Its Ink Can
Vary According To The Need. At First, They Used
That To Decorate Tiles, Carpets, Vessels Etc.
There Were Many Advances For All The Buildings
Specially Mosques. On Some Buildings, There
Were Abstract Art Such As Pictures Of Animals
And Plants And Description Of Different
Activities
PHILOSOPHY

• During the Abbasid caliphate a number of thinkers and scientists


contributions were appreciated.
• First philosopher at that time was al-Kindi. In his philosophy of nature, he
showed matter, motion, and time to be closely related concepts.
• Three speculative thinkers, the two Persians al-Farabi and Avicenna and
the Arab al-Kindi, combined Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism with other
ideas introduced through Islam.
• In Spain, Arabic philosophic literature was translated into Hebrew and
Latin, contributing to the development of modern European philosophy.

strong value placed on
education, both in the Qur'an and
in the life of the Prophet
Muhammad.
