4. Emerging Trends in Laundry Operations

3
1. LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT
• It take a significant amount of different types
of equipment to outfit the laundry depend on
the hotel size, level of guest service and the
other factors.

4
5
Laundry carts
• Linens are usually transport to the laundry,
within the laundry and to the storage outside
the laundry by carts
• Laundry carts have various sizes, common size
carry 100 to 300 pounds of linen
• Carts should be cleaned and sanitized on a
regular basic
• Carts for soiled linen should be different from
carts for clean linen

6
7
Laundry chutes
• Laundry chutes normally located inside
housekeeping storage area on each floor
• This is the most convenient way to get
guestroom laundry to laundry room
• Laundry chutes should be cleaned regularly to
remove lint and dust
• Fire detection or suppression equipment in
the chutes are required
• Laundry chutes should be kept locked after
use
8
9
• Automated overhead monorail system

10
• There are 2 commercial washer types:
conventional washer-extractors and tunnel
washers

11
12
• Extractors

13
Dryers
• Most dryers now have microprocessor-driven
control systems that can sense moisture in the
load and turn off the machine automatically

14
• Flatwork ironers

15
• Folders

2. LAUNDRY DESIGN
• Having a well-designed facility with correctly
installed equipment, equipment modifications
and equipment break downs due to overuse
and misapplication will be minimized
• Laundry design usually made by outside
contractors. These contractors should be
aware of hotel occupancy, F&B covers,
quantities of soiled linen…

18
ACTIVITY 2
Kể tên các vật dụng, đồ dùng cần được bộ
phận laundry làm sạch

19
• Laundry items

20
21
Signs that the laundry is overloaded:
• Too many last-minute rush jobs
• Linen shortages continuously
• Linen staff have to work overtime
• Work place is tight, seem to be many
employees, carts and equipment for the space

22
If managers planning a new in-house laundry,
following spaces should be considered:
• Laundry manager’s office
• Soiled linen storage and sorting
• Washing and finishing
• Clean linen storage and cart packing
• Valet
• Uniform storage and issue
• Mechanical
• Washing chemical storage and injection systems
• Air compressor and refrigerated dryer
23
Adjacencies and workflow:
• Garment shop should be adjacent to uniform
storage
• Uniform room should be near employee
lockers rooms, time clock station, employee
entrance
• Laundry should be adjacent to main service
corridor, and near the valet shop and uniform
room
• U shape flow is desirable, thus allowing soiled
linen to enter at one location and exit at
another 24

average expected workload

4. EMERGING TRENDS IN LAUNDRY OPERATIONS
• Outsourcing the laundry function to avoid
capital investment needed to install or
upgrade laundry facilities
• “In-sourcing” the laundry to the third party in
case of on-premises laundry is the must.
• Third party in charge of daily operations and
provides the management, labor, supplies,
equipment maintenance and in some cases, to
install or upgrade laundry equipment

31
• Radio frequency identification (RFID) track for
linen and uniform
• Centralized laundry operations serving a
number of hotels in urban areas
• Using ozone for bleaching and sanitizing
• Water recycling could savings of 60-65%
• Develop and implement “Green Initiatives” to
reduce the volume of linen used in hotel

32

every day?

2.Do we need to use some kind of linen again
