Holidays observed in Hungary.
1st January – New Year’s Day
15th March – Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolutionary outbreak of
1848
Easter – Usually in March or April from Good Friday through Easter
Monday.
Pentecost Monday – 50 days after Easter.
1st May – Labour Day
20th August – Saint Stephen’s Day (founder of the Hungarian state)
23rd October – National Day in memory of the 1956 revolution

Before Easter weekend people are
actually wishing girls and woman to get
‘many sprinklers’. On Easter Monday aka
Dousing Day, groups of boys and young
men visit the homes of girls and women
of their lives sprinkling them with water,
rose water or nowadays cologne. They
recite one of the many existing sprinkling
songs (or make up their own) and request
their egg in exchange for the sprinkling.
Pentecost Monday/Whit Monday

Its a Christian holiday marking the


end of the Easter cycle after 50
days . Celebrating the Symbol of
Holy Spirit. It is celebrated like a
folk festival and is colorful day
where one come across a lot of
traditions and a variety of
different performances.
Anniversary of the Hungarian
Revolution of 1848

The main event of the March 15th


celebration is held at the Hungarian
National Museum where young
Hungarian revolutionaries led by
Lajos Kossuth held a mass
demonstration on the first day of the
revolution in 1848.
First of May, Labor Day

International Workers’ Day is called


Labor Day, Worker’s Day, or in some
countries, referred to as May Day. In
Hungary, the day is called the “Munka
ünnepe” (Celebration of work) and is
a public holiday. The economic and
social achievements of workers are
recognized on this day.
St Stephen's
Day
It is called as St. Stephen’s Day, remembering
Stephen I, the first king of Hungary and founder of
the Kingdom of Hungary, He was canonized on 20
August 1083, and 20 August is his feast day in
Hungary.
Celebrated with a half-hour fireworks display on the
bank of the Danube in the evening, watched from
both river banks, the Buda hills, and the rooftops of
Pest and Buda. It is one of the greatest holidays for
Hungarians.

establish free elections. Also the
day of the proclamation of the
Third Hungarian Republic (1989).
