CHAPTER 1 : THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

1.1 THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN NAME

“ Halloween “ it's actually two words smushed together.

Just as November 1 was once called All Hallows’
Day, October 31 was called All Hallows’ Eve.
Over time, All Hallows’ Eve was shortened to Halloween!
1.2 THE ORIGIN OF THE HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION

The origin of Halloween and many of its customs can be

traced to Samhain, an ancient pagan Celtic festival that
is Gaelic for “summer’s end,” a day to bid good-bye to
warmth and light. It marks the end of the harvest season
and the start of winter (the darker “half” of the year). The
day was also said to be a time when the veil between the
living and the dead was the thinnest, and it was also a
time of communing with otherworldly spirits, with big
bonfires lit in honor of the dead.

It is believed that
Halloween is also linked to
the Roman festival honoring
Pomona, the goddess of
fruit trees.
1.3 INFLUENCES ON HALLOWEEN

-Christian Origins: All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day

Many of Celtic traditions were reframed with a Christian narrative
in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the pagan practices.
Halloween celebrants know it or not, they’re following the legacy
of the ancient Celts who, with the festival of Samhain, celebrated
the inevitability of death and rebirth.

- Ancient Celtic Origins: Samhain

All Saints Day was moved to November 1 to co-opt a Celtic Irish celebration
called Samhain.
During this festival, the world of the gods “was believed to be made visible to
humankind,” and ghosts of the dead and spirits from the Otherworld were
thought to return to the earth during Samhain.
1.4 HOW HALLOWEEN CAME TO AMERICA ?
Halloween originated in Europe but during the 19th century the
influx of Irish and Scottish immigrants brought it to North
America, where it spread in popularity and evolved in many ways.
The traditions and imagery of Halloween are largely adopted from
horror stories and gothic works—ghosts, vampires, other
monsters, haunted houses.
