WHAT IS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING?

 Chemical engineering is based on applications of

chemistry, biology, physics, materials science,
mathematics and economics.
WHAT CHEMICAL ENGINEERS DO?

Chemical engineers work on a wide variety of projects: basic

and applied research, product development, design and
modification of processes and equipment and plant operation.
Examples:
 In the manufacture of inorganic products such as acids,

alkalis, ammonia, fertilizers, paint pigments, ceramics,

semiconductors and other electronic materials.
 In the manufacture of organic products such as polymer

fibers, films, coatings, textiles, cellulise, paper, dyes,

explosive, rubber, rocket propellants, solvents, plastics,
agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, coal-based fuels and
petrochemicals
1.4 THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
ACTIVITY 1:
 Write a one page essay of the following topic:

Select two of among the typical functions of chemical

engineers stated in lecture notes that interest you. Name
one example of industry/company that might be relevant
to the jobs selected. Then, describe your role and
contribution as a chemical engineer in the company.

Date of submission: One week after, submit in class.

Conceive-Design-

(CDIO)
CDIO – Innovative educational framework for
producing the next generation of engineers.
The framework provides students with
education stressing engineering fundamentals
set in context of Conceiving-Designing-
Implement-Operating real-world systems and
products.

Beginning engineers should be able to Conceive--
Design--Implement--Operate complex value-added
engineering products and systems in modern team-
based environments.

They should be able to participate in engineering

processes, contribute to the development of
engineering products, and do so while working in
engineering organizations.

This is the essence of the engineering profession.

Teach (T)
Students are exposed to a topic. No explicit learning objectives.
No major activities such as assignments, exercises or projects.
No assessment is linked to this topic.

Use (U)
There is an explicit learning objective.
Compulsory activities, such as assignments, exercises or projects are specifically linked to
this topic.
Students are assessed and receive feedback, it may or may not affect grade.

Assess (A)
Assumes students already have some proficiency in this topic.
It is utilized mainly to learn and/or assess other learning objectives
ENGINEERING COMMUNICATION & TEAMWORK
Engineering Communication

Communication is an important way of acting in the

world. Professionals in engineering must be
prepared throughout their career to learn how to
communicate. In this topic, students will be
introduced with general information about effective
communication. Students will also involve in
activities related to enhance their communication skills.

Definitions

Communication is the ways of imparting or exchanging of information either by

through written, verbal or body language, or with any other medium, which
involves both presenters and audiences.
ACTIVITY CDIO: COMMUNICATION

A GOOD COMMUNICATOR AND A GOOD

LISTENER
 Divide the class into 4 members
 Select one member to be a facilitator/speaker, the

rest of members are to be the listeners

FOLLOW UP:

Remember when you communicate with others,

they may not receive the message you sent.
Individual perceptions vary:

 If you were given the same directions, why

everyone’s products different?
 What does this mean to you as a communicator?
RE-DO READING INSTRUCTIONS:
 Now the all of you are required to write your own
instructions for this activity.
 Regroup into listening teams as before. Each team
member should read his or her directions aloud as the
remaining members do the paper folding and tearing.
 After all the team members have taken turn reading
directions, determine whose directions were the
easiest to follow.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
 What did or did not work in your directions?
 What did you do to communicate more
accurately in the second exercise?
 Why are good communications needed
everywhere in life?
 What kinds of real-life situations could be
avoided if clear communication were always
possible?
COMING UP NEXT CDIO ACTIVITY:
 INTRODUCTION TO TEAMWORK:
ACTIVITY 2/ ACTIVITY 4

 WRITTEN COMMUNICATION & ORAL

PRESENTATION: ACTIVITY 5
ASSIGNING TEAM MEMBERS:
 Team members will consist of minimum 4
members
 All the team activities throughout the semester
will be done together by the same team members
 The leader of each activity may be rotated.
