1. Spoken/oral communication skills  presentation, aware of audience’s character, critical
listening, and body language (public speaking knowledge, TV/Radio broadcast, presentation)
2. Written communication skills  printed or electronic : ability to write effectively in various
contexts, audience, and purposes
Background skills: academic writing, editing, critical reading, data presentation, AND mastery of
electronic communication (SMS, email, online discussion forum, chat room, and instant messaging)

3. Non-verbal communication skills expressing ideas through body language, gestures, facial
expressions, voice intonation, and visual images, icons, symbols
aware of audience’s character, personal presentation, and body language. Example: pantomime

Know Your Goal and State It Clearly
• Argumentative? Descriptive? Recount? Etc.

Use the Correct Tone for Your Purpose


• Memo & proposal: formal, private letter: informal

Keep Language Simple


• Don’t overuse “big words” (terms & sophisticated jargons)

Stay on Topic and Keep It Concise


• Avoid information that is not relevant, keep it short and concise
