Airlift
Foundation
The idea of Airlift was conceived by the founding Chief Executive Usman Gul after
he experienced the congestion during his visit to Lahore for vacations which was
caused by the inefficiency of local transportation.
In March 2019, Gul along with a small team founded the Airlift and launched its
operations with a pilot project in Lahore. Gul initially self funded the startup using
US$ 50,000.
As of July 2019, the company was operating in two Pakistani cities, Karachi and
Lahore. In August 2019, Airlift raised $2.2 million in seed funding from local and
international institutions.
According to a report, Airlift acquired 50,000 riders in Lahore in less than five
months of its operations. In November 2019, the company raised Series A funding
of $12 million which included participation from American venture capital firm
First Round Capital.
How it works?
How does Airlift work?
Airlift runs on a fixed routes that touches major residential areas and commercial hubs.
All you need to do is make an account, select pick up and drop off points on a given route and book a seat,
then you have to take a short walk to the pick-up point to get onboard and take a short walk on drop off
Cart and Travel services like SWL and Airlift are not that common so there is not a
lot of competition hence creating many opportunities for growth.
There are not many services in Karachi where you can pool cash and get to travel in
a well maintained and air conditioned van.
These companies also create employment opportunities for drivers and car
dealerships. Sometimes different car dealerships rent their cars to these companies
to be used as taxis.
Threats
Airlift is running successfully and many people started opting for it. But soon after an another
company with the name of SVWL started the same service which also is giving the same
services on almost same pricing policies.
Careem and uber had been the first option for many people but after the success of Airlift if
these companies start the same service it can result in a loss for Airlift as Careem and uber has
already established a name for themselves and there are more users of Careem and uber and if
they start the same service with same pricing it wouldn’t be beneficial for Airlift.
Economic factor isn’t also helping and due to this pandemic, they weren’t allowed to operate
due to distancing and also the fuel prices and other expenses like maintenance, rent etc. are
also going to increase due to which it may be possible that there will be an increase in fare
prices and that would not help them as people will stop using the service as they are known for
less price cost.
Airlift Express
Airlift introduced an online grocery service in Pakistan with the name of "Airlift Express"
bringing $10 Million foreign investment. Airlift Express promises an amazing shopping
experience through its express delivery of all orders within 45 minutes. Shoppers would also
be able to choose from a wide range of products, which are sure to be delivered with accuracy
and in high quality. Airlift Express is currently operating in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi.
When, Why & How it works?
On a mission to enable self-empowerment in the region, on July 1st, 2020,
Airlift Express was introduced.

Conclusion
Airlift has turned out to be a successful business but only pre COVID,
therefore it does has it’s draw backs.
The standard and comfort ability level has risen due to Airlift and swvl due
to which the customers demand to see more of this and govt might do
something for public transportation in Pakistan, before private companies
takeover this region.
As we analyzed in SWOT analysis that opportunities for lower labor such
as drivers and mechanics have taken a rise, as well as for rent a car
businesses.
