THE EFFECT OF GIVING RED guava juice ON THE

increasing OF HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS IN ANEMIA
PATIENTS

Theresia Anindita Putri Wardani

202031041
background
Menorrhagia is a menstrual disorder clinically
defined as excessive menstrual blood loss,
blood loss of more than 80 ml per cycle, and
menstruation lasting 8-10 days or a short
menstrual cycle (every 21 days).

Based on the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC),

one of the nursing actions with a nursing diagnosis of
fatigue is the provision of non-pharmacological therapy
which includes complementary therapy consisting of
herbal therapy, namely giving red guava juice to increase
hemoglobin levels, so we found research that can
overcome energy imbalance disorders.
Research problem
Knowing the effect of giving red guava juice on the increase in Hb
levels in the second level student associate degree midwifery of
Surabaya health sciences
Research hypothesis
The research hypothesis is not mentioned in the journal

Method Quantitative

Research DESIGN

This research is a pre-experimental research design with one group pre-

test-post-test design.
POPULATION
All Surabaya health science of associate degree midwifery students.

SAMPLE
Amount : 18 respondents
Inclusion criteria: Second level student associate degree midwifery
of Surabaya health sciences, not currently consuming Fe tablets

Exclusion criteria:
Not mentioned in the journal.

Sampling technique:
This study used a total sampling technique
intervention

• This study was given intervention by consuming red guava juice for
4 days after breaking the fast.
• On the first day, the respondents were checked for their Hb levels
before consuming red guava juice.
• Each respondent was given the intervention of 400 grams of red
guava juice plus 100 ml of water and 1 tablespoon of sugar, then
blended.
• On the fifth day, the Hb level data was collected after being given
red guava juice for 4 days.

Statistical test paired t test.

Research result
1. The presentation of the research results is based on the statistical tests used
Table 1. Frequency Distribution of Respondents'
Hb Levels before giving red guava juice

From this study in table 1 shows that a small

proportion of female students with Hb levels of 9 gr
% are 1 student (5.6%) and female students with Hb
levels of 13.4 gr are 2 female students (11.1%). It
was found that the average female student before
being given red guava juice was 12,806.
Table 2. Frequency Distribution of Respondents Hb Levels
After Giving Red Guava Juice.

From this research in table 2 shows that a small

proportion of female students with an Hb level
of 9.7 gr are 1 student and most of the female
students with an Hb level of 16.5 gr are 3
female students. It was found that the average
Hb level after being given red guava juice was
14,133.
Table 3.Effect of Giving Red Guava Juice on Increasing Hb
Levels in D3 Midwifery Students at Stikes Surabaya.

From these data, it was found that from 18 female students

there was a difference in the average after being given the
red guava juice intervention, namely -2.179 with the paired t
test statistical test obtained P 0.019 <0.05, which means
there is a difference in giving guava juice.
Conclusion of resulth

There is an effect that giving red guava juice can increase Hb levels in the
second level students of Midwifery in Stikes Surabaya with a p value of
0.019 <0.05.

GENERAL CONCLUSIONS AND DETAILED DISCUSSION

The results showed an increase in hemoglobin levels after

being given red guava juice. The content in red guava
contains compounds that can increase Hb levels in the blood,
including iron, vitamin C, vitamin A, copper and
phosphorus. Iron is a mineral that is in red guava which is
needed to carry oxygen throughout the body.
The results showed that 15 out of 18 respondents
experienced an increase in hemoglobin levels after being
given intervention with red guava juice and there were 3
respondents who did not experience an increase in
hemoglobin levels.
ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH RESULTS AND
RELEVANCE
Red guava has a more complete content with a higher vitamin C content and
contains iron. In addition, the content in red guava is B2, vitamin E, vitamin A,
phosphorus, and vitamin B6. If the function goes well, red blood cells are well
maintained, so that hemoglobin levels increase and will prevent anemia. Iron and
folic acid are used as production in the formation of red blood cells in the presence
of vitamins that will help maintain red blood cells and prevent anemia.
Based on the results of research conducted by Fahtimatus Zahra Fitria in 2019, it was
stated that the provision of red guava juice can increase hemoglobin levels in students
of Midwifery Diploma II Midwifery at Stikes Surabaya with p value <0.005. This is
because red guava contains iron with vitamin C which will form complex iron
ascorbate which is soluble and easy for the body to surrender. This is also in line with
research conducted by Pagdya Haninda, et al. In 2018 which stated that giving red
guava juice at a dose of 100 grams of red guava can increase serum hemoglobin and
ferritin levels for 7 days. Iron absorption is strongly influenced by the presence of
vitamin C in the body.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RESEARCH RESULTS
AND MANAGED CASES

In the journal, it was found that giving red guava juice was proven to
increase hemoglobin levels. In the case of management, the patient was
treated for menorrhagia. The patient complains of weakness, the head feels
dizzy, feels tired and drowsy. The patient also experienced irregular
menstruation for 1 week with daily bleeding volumes up to 8 full contexts.
The patient was examined and the results were pale, conjunctival anemic,
capillary refill 4 seconds, and hemoglobin LAB 7 g / dl. These are signs that
the patient has anemia due to menorrhagia.
SUGGESTIONS OR FOLLOW-
UP
It is hoped that it can be given and consumed in anemic patients who experience
a decrease in hemoglobin levels. This herbal therapy can be used as an alternative
therapy or a companion to medical therapy. For further researchers, giving red
guava juice should not be given during the fasting month to maximize results and
in giving this red guava juice can be combined with honey to prevent
constipation
RECOMMENDATIONS THAT NURSING
STUDENTS
It is hoped that health nursing students can increase information about non-
pharmacological therapies which include complementary therapies consisting of
herbal therapy for anemia patients who have decreased hemoglobin levels, one of
which is by giving red guava juice to increase the patient's hemoglobin level.
