There is a requirement to meet recommended high class standards for temporary living accommodation and
related facilities and services.
General considerations for all areas should include the provision of:
Natural light during the daytime and adequate artificial light

Outside lighting for safe movement at night

air conditioning (heating and/or cooling) as appropriate.  

Supplies of safe potable water

 Sanitation facilities.

Waste management

Furniture for each worker to secure his or her belongings.

 Pest and mosquito control.


They should have the following essential characteristics:
 be installed on solid compacted ground or on foundation blocks
 be specially designed to provide good quality accommodation and lend themselves to being easily cleaned
 avoid products that produce toxic gases, e.g. polyurethane mattresses and insulation materials
 be weather tight and be insulated appropriate to prevailing climatic conditions

be provided with heating, fans and/or air conditioning as necessitated by the prevailing climatic conditions
  be suitably ventilated with an adequate provision of fresh air
g)  in accommodation areas, have soundproofed common walls between accommodations units, and within other buildings where noise might be a nuisance
h)  be fit for lifting and have certified lifting points in the case of portacabins and skid-mounted trailers
i)  for units with frequent access, e.g. workshops, be on the outer strings of the camp. Access to the clinic for ambulances and to food stores for logistics should also be considered
j)  safe access to roofs and fall and slip/trip prevention measures (including lifeline attachment point) on frequently accessed roofs should be in place
NOTE Because of frequent moves, roof-mounted equipment such as satellite dishes requires frequent access.
k)  have struts or stabilizers on the four corners to take the load off the wheels and tyres when trailers remain static for long period
l)  have access stairs that:
• are removable for ease of transporting the trailer
• have a platform area at the top to allow room for people to open the doors safely
 • have at least one handrail
• are firmly attached to the trailer.
