History…
 1973 : Gates left for Harvard University,
enrolled as a pre-law student
 1974 : Dropped out of Harvard and
Microsoft was formed with Paul Allen.
 1979 : licensed MS-DOS to IBM
 1986 : MS went public, and Gates became
a 31-year old billionaire.

 1987 : The first version of Windows was
introduced.
 1993 : a million copies per month in sales.
 1995 : Gates saw Internet as the next area
of focus
The Anti-trust Case…
 "Antitrust" basically means "Abuse of
Monopoly Position“
 Windows 3.1 required DOS - was not, itself,
an operating system.

 When the beta version of Windows 3.1 was


run on DR-DOS, the message: “Non-fatal
error detected: Error number [varied].
Please contact Windows 3.1 beta support.
Press enter to exit or C to continue..” was
flagged!!

 1996 : The judge ruled : "Caldera has
presented sufficient evidence that the
incompatibilities alleged were part of an
anticompetitive scheme by Microsoft."
 Settlement – out of court
 1996 : 75% of web users were using
Netscape

 Netscape - free of charge
 Microsoft - never charged for IE, but
bundled it with Windows
 1998 :IE had won
 IE was the core of the Microsoft antitrust
trial.

 MS offered bulk discounts to OEMs, with
certain conditions - a certain percentage of
PCs shipped must have Windows installed,
and that they must not "dual-boot"
 Netscape was killed by MS’s dominance of
the OS market.

 1998, Microsoft agreed to allow OEMs to
install Windows 95 without the Internet

 June 2000 : Judge Jackson ordered that
Microsoft be split into two companies - one
to supply Operating Systems, the other to
supply Applications

 2001:Department of Justice announced that
it no longer wanted to break Microsoft into
two companies.
