DEFINITION

Anemia is defined as hemoglobin(Hb) levels <12.0g/dL in women and <13.0g/dL in men.

Anemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or haemoglobin concentration with in
blood is lower than normal .

Incidence
Globally, anaemia affects 1.62 billion
people (95% ), which corresponds
to 24.8% of the population . The
highest prevalence is in preschool-age
children (47.4%) and the lowest
prevalence is in men (12.7%).
•  The prevalence of anaemia is
estimated to be higher in India when
compared to all other developing
countries.
• Also, it is the second leading cause of
maternal deaths in the country.
• India ranks 170 out of 180 countries
for anaemia among women, according
to global nutrition survey, 2016
• According to the National Family Health
Survey 4 (NFHS-4): in INDIA …

• 58.4% of children aged 6–59 months


• 53.1% of nonpregnant women aged 15–49
years
• 50.3% of pregnant women aged 15–49 years
• 53% of all women aged 15–49 years,
• 22.7% of men aged 15–49 years,
• 54% of adolescent girls
• 29% of adolescent boys were anaemic
