The Visayas was first encountered by the Spaniards in 1521.
Prior to the colonization of
the Spaniards, the people in
these places have
evidences of rich culture
which are woven in their arts
and traditions.
PANAY ISLAND
HANDLOOMED WEAVING

The primary art and one of the best sources of livelihood in Panay Island.

A heritage industry in Iloilo.

Derived from the Hiligaynon


word “habol” which means
“to weave”.
PATADYONG

A traditional Filipino cloth


worn by women wrapped
around like a skirt.
The island of Panay is also known for its magnificent houses
and churches.
AKLAN

The province is known for basket, tray and mat-making.


BARIW

A type of pandan leaves used in their mat-making.

interaction with their friend and
neighbor.

NEGROS ISLAND
Before the Spaniards came,
Negros is called “Buglas”, a
type of grass similar to sugar
cane.
Negros is known for its
sugarcane business and its
famous Masskara Festival
celebrated in Bacolod.
MASSKARA FESTIVAL
The art of weaving is an essential part of Negrense’s rich culture.
Their weaving practices are
evident in their roofs, clothing,
walls, hats and baskets. In their
baskets, they usually use
pandan and buri leaves.
PINYA WEAVING

They import raw materials in Aklan and they also have their own
way of weaving styles and designs.
SINAMAY TEXTILE

It is made from abaca by


the people from Valencia.
