PUNJABI CULTURE

 Word “Punjab” is a mixture of two words punj(five) and


aab(water) which collectively translate to land of five
waters(rivers).
 Punjab is the largest province of Pakistan in terms of
population.
 56% of total population of Pakistan resides in Punjab.
 It shares culture and traditions with Indian Punjab.
 Punjab has total 36 districts.
 Punjab contributes 50-60% of total economy of Pakistan.
 Punjab is famous for it’s cuisine, poetry, architecture, music,
artistry, philosophy, traditions and values and history

LANGUAGES

 Punjabi is the provincial language of Punjab.


 Punjabi is spoken and understood by almost all Pakistan.
 Punjabi is first language of about 44% of Pakistanis.
 Urdu is also spoken in Punjab.
 Urdu is considered more formal language.
 Punjabi has different dialects depending on the region.
 Key Punjabi dialect are:
1. Pothowari (spoken in Rawalpindi and nearby areas)
2. Hindko (mostly spoken in KPK province)
3. Majhi (spoken in Lahore, Gujranwala and nearby areas)
4. Saraiki (spoken in south Punjab)
5. Pahari (spoken in Kashmir and other mountainous areas)
DRESSES

 Punjabi costumes are usually bright and vibrant.


 These costumes represent vibrant culture and lifestyle of
people.
 Dresses are mix of color, comfort and beauty.
 Phulkari(embroidery) is very famous in Punjabi costumes.
 In villages men wear dhoti, lacha, with khusa.
 Pagri(turban) is also very famous among men.
 In villages women wear gharara, choridar pajama, paranda,
dupatta, khusa and tilly wali jutti.
 Whereas in urban areas of Punjab men and women follow
latest trends and fashion
 Different types of shalwar kameez and kurtas are worn.

CUISINE

 Punjabi cuisine can be vegetarian or non-vegetarian.


 Punjabis are usually fond of sweet meats.
 One common thing in every Punjabi dish is liberal use of
ghee(clarified butter) and spices.
 Most Punjabi dishes are eaten with rice or roti(flat bread).
 Dishes exclusive to Punjab are paratha, makai di roti, sarson
da saag.
 Tea is commonly consumed in all seasons.
 Other Punjabi beverages include lassi, doodh-soda, aloo
bukharay ka sharbat and lemonade.
 In cities haleem, biryani, karahi etc. are consumed.
 These cuisines have become world-wide delicacies with large
scale representation.

CULTURAL FESTIVALS

 There are numerous festivals celebrated by Punjabi people.


 Some religious festivals include eid-ul-fitr, eid-ul-adha, eid
milad-ul-nabi and urs(devotional fairs).
 Melas and numaish are famous festivals held in a large place.
 The Provincial capital Lahore is widely popular for its
entertaining events and activities.
 Lahori’s are famous all over the country for their celebrations.
 One famous lahori festival is basant(kite flying) celebrated in
spring season.
 Other festivals celebrated in Punjab region include Baisakhi,
Teej, Kanak Katai etc.

DANCE AND MUSIC

 Bhangra is most commonly known Punjabi music genre and


dance style.
 Punjabis passionately love folk songs/music and Qawali. 
 Punjabi music is recognized throughout the world.
 The Tabla, Dhol, Dholki, Chimta, Flute and Sitar are all
common instruments of this delightful culture.
 Punjabi dance is based around happiness, energy and
enthusiasm.
 Punjabi dance is one of the most famous in the world.
 Different forms of dance in Punjab are: Loddi, Dhamal,
Sammi, Kikli, Gatka, Bhangra and Giddha.
 Punjabi music is getting mixed with pop music and results are
amazing.
