EDUCATION AT DIFFERENT LEVELS
STRUCTURE OF TEACHER EDUCATION AT DIFFERENT
LEVELS
The structure of Teacher Education means the logical
arrangement of the units or components of teacher
education which includes teaching skills, perpetuates
objective related to individual as well as social
development and generates teaching culture. The needs
and requirements of students are different at different
levels of education. Hence, teacher education has been
organised at different levels. At present, the organisation
of teacher education in our country is found in two forms
– Pre-Service Teacher Education and In-Service Teacher
Education.
The following aspects of teacher education will be different at
different levels of teacher education.
1) Teaching Skills: These are related to the area of teaching which
includes various teaching strategies of various methodologies
and techniques.
2) Teaching Objectives: These are related to teaching goals in
conformity with national goals and values. These include various
type of courses which serve as the means to attain the ends.
3) Teaching Culture: It is related to social and logical values. It
includes the modification of behaviour, development of human
qualities and enrichment of social and ideological norms in a
right direction.
Structure of Teacher Education at different levels:
1) Pre-Primary Teacher Education: In India pre-
primary teacher education exists in name only.
No appropriate attention has been paid in it. The
only schools for the training of teachers in the
area of Pre-Primary Teacher Education are in
Allahabad, Agra, Lucknow and Delhi. The
objectives of Pre-Primary Teacher Education
should be:
• To understand the process and principles of growth and
development of children, theoretical and practical knowledge
about early childhood education, teaching skills related to story
telling, games, poem recitation, audio-visual aids, importance of
home-school relationship etc.
2) Primary Teacher Education/ Elementary Teacher Education:
Institutions like District Institutes of Education and Training,
Department of Correspondence courses, Normal Schools give
training to individuals who want to be elementary or primary
teachers. Courses like Diploma in Elementary Education, Diploma
in Education, Primary Teachers Certificates are being offered in
such institutions. The minimum qualification for such courses is
class 12th passed or graduation and duration of the course is
generally of 2 years. The objectives at this level should be:
• To make trainees understand about child’s
psychology, growth and development of
children, educational theories, roles and
responsibilities of teachers, classroom
management, skills and strategies to teach
school subjects, skills to organise co-
curricular activities etc.
3) Secondary/Higher Secondary Teacher Education: At
this stage the minimum qualification of teacher
trainees is graduation. Institutions like College of
Teacher Education, Department of Teacher
Education, Central Institute of Education, State
Institute of Education, Department of
Correspondence Courses, Universities provide 2
years of training to those who want to teach in
secondary schools. Courses like B.Ed, B.A/B.Sc B.Ed
are being offered. Objectives at this level should be:
• To develop teaching skills, educational theories, measurement and
evaluation, action research, educational philosophy, educational
psychology, child’s growth and development, guidance and
counselling, physical education, co-curricular activities,
environmental education etc.
4) Teacher Education for Children With Special Needs/Exceptional
Children: Institutions like Training Institutes for Dumb and Deaf
Children’s Teachers, Training Institutes for Blind Children’s Teachers
and many colleges and universities provide Bachelor of Education,
Special Education courses to those who want to teach differently able
children. Generally the minimum qualification for such courses is
graduation and duration of the course is 2 years. Objectives should
be:
• To provide special and advanced skills and training, theoretical and
practical knowledge in terms of teaching skills and other skills etc.
5) Training Colleges for Specialized Subjects and Activities:
Colleges and Department of Art Teaching, Language Teaching,
Physical Education etc provide courses for specific subjects.
6) Higher Teacher Education: Courses like Master of
Education( M.Ed) , M.Phil, Ph.D are being offered by both
private and government universities. To teach in Higher
Education Institutions these qualifications are needed.
Teaching objectives at this level should include:
• To develop problem solving skill, research methodology,
critical thinking, scientific temper, educational administration,
curriculum construction, educational research etc.
