DEFINITION OF CULTURE SYSTEM
A culture system refers to the interaction of several elements and
components.
A fish culture is the process of rearing fish in a pond or water reservoir.
The following are the types of culture systems: mono culture, poly-
culture. Intensive, integrated and extensive systems.

Mono culture refers tom farming of single specie, while poly culture
refers to farming of multiple species of fish is a culture facility.
 CULTURE SYSTEMS
INTEGRATED FISH FARMING: This EXTENSIVE SYSTEM: The fish are
fish farming alongside other forms allowed to fend for themselves in this
of agriculture system.
SEMI-INTENSIVE: In this system, the
farmers depends on artificial fish
feeds but not completely like in the
intensive system.
INTENSIVE SYSTEM: This system does
not rely on the availability of natural
feeds, instead depends on artificial
feeds to raise fish at high density. It also
requires technology.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
OF INTEGRATED FISH FARMING
ADVANTAGES
1. There is economical utilization
of wetland
2. The produce is usually very
high
3. Easily maintained
4. Yields high profit
5. Provides opportunity to
control over harvesting
DISADVANTAGES
1. Requires large inputs such as
feeds and water
2. There is high rate of wastage in
terms of output
3. Encourages competition of
resources because of scarcity
4. The density of livestock on the
farm makes them vulnerable
5. Pond can easily be contaminated
if not properly managed.
 SOME OTHER CULTURE SYSTEMS
1. CAGE SYSTEM: this is placing of
cages in a lake or rivers to raise
fish.

2. Irrigation ditch: this is the use of

irrigation channels to rear fish
