MANAGEMENT PLANS AND
PROGRAMS
HISTORY OF MANITO, ALBAY
 MANITO is located on the eastern part of Albay, elevated as plateau facing Legazpi City: on the west of the Albay Gulf and
surrounded by mountains on the east and south.
 The poblacion Is just a stone's throw away from the seashore. It was bounded between two rivers, the Kamanitohan and
Buyo rivers that serve as Irrigation for small ricefield and sources of the residents.
 Contrary to the people of this small town belief, the first settlers in the area came from Bacon, Cagraray Island or Casiguran
which are geographically situated near Manito In prehistoric time, the Bicolanos from the above mentioned places had
shown evidence of civilization. Recently, artifacts unearthed from this place both by Filipino and foreign anthropologist show
that Bicol Is Indeed Inhabited first by Bicolanos, not traders from foreign lands.
 In 1840, a few settlers FROM the Visayas settled in the place near the coast of Manito, because of fear from Moro
marauders. They officially established the place and named it Manito, because it was abundant in clinging vine called "nito”
which belongs to rattan family and is used as raw material for making baskets. When nito vines are artistically made into
baskets, the finished products are beautiful because of the natural dark brown color similar to the color of coffee. The prefix
"Ma” means plenty and therefore Manito means "plenty of nito".
 Later, natives from the neighboring towns of Albay, Bacon, and Rapu-rapu who fled from the Moro raiders found a safer
place near the seashore and near the west of Manito. The town was surrounded by thick forest that gave natural protection
— or haven of safety and comfort — to the Visayan settlers. Although they were braved and courageous they lacked arms
and ammunitions to fight the Moros.
HISTORY OF MANITO, ALBAY
 In the early years, the settlement in the center of this place that soon became the Poblacion, has only few scattered
houses surrounded the forests. The cleared areas were planted with abaca and other crops. Due to the abundance of
food and money which the people earned through the sale of their forest and agricultural products Manito became a
progressive settlement. But today it is left behind by neighboring towns. This is probably due to its poor natural location
and lack of industry. Forests are mostly denuded due to concession granting permission to cut trees in 1980s, while
replanting of trees was neglected. Perhaps if nito vines had been planted together with other forest trees, the income
for this industry might be one of the major source of the residents these days.
 The patron saint of this town is St. Raphael, the Archangel whose feast day is celebrated every 24TH day of October.
 In 1982 the Municipality of Manito emerged in the limelight by virtue of PD k.20364 establishing Manito as reservation
area for Geothermal Exploration and development on June 1994, the BACMAN geothermal Project has started its full
operation and on October 8,1998, His Excellency President Joseph Estrada inaugurated the additional 1.5 megawatt
power/multi-crop drying plant located at Pawa, Manito in support of his food security program.

BRIEF HISTORY OF MANITO NHS:
The Manito Rural High School started during the SY 1966-1967 with seventy nine (79) students composed of forty (40) boys and thirty
nine (39) girls with Mr. Noe Arbo as the class adviser. Mr. Leandro E. Lanuzo acted as School Head, who at that time was the principal of
Manito Elementary School;
Mr. Conrado Micaller was the District Supervisor. Manito Rural High School adapted the General Secondary Curriculum under the
supervision of Mr. Clodualdo H. Leocadio, Division Superintendent. From 1966 to 1969 there were one section of first year and one section of
second year students. From 1968-1970, the third year and fourth year students of Manito Rural High School were accommodated at Albay
High School in Legazpi City due to lack of rooms and teachers.
However, when Mrs. Rosita Dave was the principal, starting SY 1970-1972, the name of school was changed to Manito Barrio High
School. This time, the third year students with only one section continued their schooling at Manito Barrio High School. The honorarium of the
teachers was taken from the tuition fees of the students. The first Commencement Exercises took place in SY 1971-1972 with thirty two (32)
graduates, comprising of nineteen (19) boys and thirteen (13) girls. The students occupied the unused rooms of Manito Central Elementary
School from 1966-1994.
The name Manito Barrio High School was changed to Manito High School.
It was only in the year 1992 when Manito High School acquired its own school site which was donated by DOñA CAROLINA ROSLYN
BAYLON with a total land area of twenty thousand square meters (20,000 sq.m.) and it is 44 kilometers away from the Division Office of
Albay.
During the SY 1998-1999, Manito high School, Cawayan Extension was opened with Ms. Emma Burcer as the Teacher-In-Charge. After
two (2) years another extension school was opened, the Manito High School, Nagotgot extension, with Mrs. Sancita B. Peñarubia as the
school head.
