Bioinformatics computing II

A Small sample of
ideas
Bioinformatics computing II
A Small sample of ideas
• The history of science is
marked by several major
breakthroughs.
The discoveries of
- Galileo, Newtonian
mechanics,
- Darwin’s theory, Mendel’s
genetics,
- Quantum pyhsics
- Computers etc
Bioinformatics computing II
A Small sample of ideas
• We are in midst of another
technological revolution,
The Natural Computing
age,
• A time when the interaction
and the similarity between
computing and nature is
becoming each day greater.
Bioinformatics computing II
A Small sample of ideas
We may notice that,
• our spreadsheats
recalculating faster
• our grammer checker
finally works
• several complex
problems being solved
• Cars driving themselves
• Robots talking
Bioinformatics computing II
Some natural
pheomenon and
processes involving
natural means
1. Clustering of dead bodies
in ant colonies
2. Bird flocking
3. Manipulating DNA
strands
Bioinformatics computing II
To clean up their nests, some
ants sp group together
corpses of ants or dead bodies
as illustrated in in the fig
below
Bioinformatics computing II
Some natural
pheomenon and
processes involving
natural means
• The basic mechanism behind
this type of clustering or
grouping phenomenon is an
attraction between dead
items mediated by the ants.
• Small clusters of items grow
by attracting more workers
to deposit more dead bodies.
Bioinformatics computing II
Some natural
pheomenon and
processes involving
natural means
• This grouping phenomenon
can be modelled using two
simple rules:
1. Pick up rule
2. Dropping rule
Bioinformatics computing II
An idea
• The Figure illustrates a bird
flock
• When we see birds flocking
in the sky, it is most natural
to assume that the birds,
follow a leader the one in
front of the flock.
