What is a scientific text

A scientific text is an article written specifically to explain or explore a scientific idea.


(Most text that students will encounter in their studies is either narrative or expository)
Scientific texts can be found in:
Reference books Biographies
Newspaper articles Magazine articles
Websites and blogs Lab Reports
Instruction Manual Science Fiction
There are 5 main sections to any technical paper.
1. The Introduction
2. Materials
3. Methods
4. Results
5. Conclusion
Features of scientific text
• Frequent use of long descriptive sentences with many clauses.
• Long complex noun phrases.
• High incidence of content specific technical vocabulary
• Many words have specific Greek and Latin roots and affixes from which word
meaning can be derived. eg:- the word science has come from the latin word
Scientia which means ‘to know’.
• Use of symbols, numbers and terms that are recognized internationally.

 Scientific and technical content is most often presented in a way to


convey information rather than to tell a story.
 They are enormously present in textbooks, magazines because the
influence of science and technology in our world makes it important
that students learn and better comprehend scientific content.
 Scientific texts include qualitative, quantitative as well as inferential
information.
 So we must know how to understand and analyze these technical
papers.
