Multiplying a Fraction and a

Whole Number and Another Fraction

LESSON 4
Problem1: Marcus has 12 marbles. He gave 1/4 of his
marbles to his friend Arnold. How many marbles did
Arnold receive?

Marcus divides his marbles into four. Each

group represent ¼ of his 12 marbles.

Looking at the illustration, we can say that

1/4 of 12 is 3. Therefore,

Marcus gave 3 marble to Arnold

Another way to solve the problem is through
 1 1
computation. 4 𝑜𝑓 12𝑖𝑠 𝑡h𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑠 4 𝑥 12=𝑛
Express the whole number as a  1 12
Step 1 𝑥 =𝑛
fraction with a denominator of 1 4 1

   1 12 12
𝑥 =
Step 2 Multiply the numerators 4 1 ❑

Multiply the denominators  112 12
Step 3 𝑥 =
4 1 4

   12
Step 4
Reduce to lowest term 𝑜𝑟 3

Problem 2: Mother bought 4/5 of pork. She used ½ of it to
cook pinakbet. How man kg of pork did she use to make
pinakbet?

Solution 1:
Solution 2:

 1
Multiply the numerators  41 4
𝑥 =
2 5 2 ❑
 4
 4 5
5  41 4
Multiply the denominators 𝑥 =

Based on the illustration above, there are double 5 2 10
shaded parts that represents the amount of
pork mother used for pinakbet.
Thus, mother used kg of pork. Reduce to lowest term  4 2
