INTRODUCTION
By understanding the importance of
ergonomics in daily life, you can easily learn how
to prevent pain or injury and make your every
day more comfortable. All you need to do is
make little changes in the body posture, lifting
techniques and working habits.
Now let’s see the problems which we are
facing in daily life and the solution for these
problems.
NOT OPERATING IN
NEUTRAL POSITION

REPETITIVE MOTIONS

AWKWARD POSITIONING

STRESS AT WORKPLACE

NOT MOVING
FREQUENTLY
 Cause : Not operating in Neutral Position
The body functions best when we work in a
neutral position. The neutral position is merely a
comfortable position that aligns all of our joints.
Remedy : Create an “ L” with your body
To operate in neutral, you want to keep your body
lengthened and aligned i.e., create an “ L ” position with your
body.
• Keep your head directly above your shoulders not tilting
forward, backward or to the side.
• Place feet flat on the floor.
• Create a 90° bend in your knees to support your upper body.
Knees should be 2” -3” off the front of your chair when
sitting.
Case Study : A person working in front of computer for
longer duration will suffer from back pain due to irregular
sitting postures. So, he must follow a proper sitting posture
to be healthy and to work effectively.
Cause : Repetitive Motions
A significant portion of work related injuries happen
over time and are caused by on going, repetitive movements.
These repetitive activities cause strain but the consistent
use of the muscles to complete the same action, overtime
can lead to stress and pain with the musculoskeletal system.
Remedy : Switch tasks every hour or use tools and
equipments
A good rule to follow when it comes to preventing
repetitive motion injuries is to frequently switch tasks so
that you are using an entirely different muscle group at the
top of every hour.
Additionally, workers should take advantage of any
ergonomic tools at workplace to reduce the risk of injury
from repetitive motions.
Case Study : A guitarist playing a guitar in a concert for
longer duration may face Repetitive Strain Injury ( RSI )
which affects their hands or arms. Due to this injury they
may have to stop playing a guitar temporarily or
permanently. So, they have switch their task frequently or
they can think some other alternatives.
Cause : Awkward Positioning
Awkward positioning refers to positions in the body when
a person deviates significantly from neutral position while
performing tasks. When a person completes a task in an
awkward position, the muscles operate less efficiently and
require the worker to expend more force to complete the
task. Some examples of awkward positioning include
bending, reaching, lifting, and twisting.
Remedy : Keep What You’re Working on Close to
You
Avoid awkward positions, it is important to keep
whatever you are working on close to you. Specifically, try
to keep everything within arms-reach. This keeps your body
closer to neutral by not requiring you to reach, twist, or
bend to get to your work.
Case Study : A student should keep his study table in an
organized way and good environment i.e., he should keep all
the necessary things on the table while studying so that he
can concentrate more on his studies. A student who is not
having clean and tidy place to study may end up with less
concentration.
Cause : Stress at workplace
Workplace stress then is the harmful physical and
emotional responses that can happen when there is a
conflict between job demands on the employee and the
amount of control an employee has over meeting these
demands.
Remedy : Working hard should not be confused
with overworking
Everyone who has ever held a job has, at some point, felt
the pressure of work-related stress. Any job can have
stressful elements, even if you love what you do. In the
short-term, you may experience pressure to meet a deadline
or to fulfill a challenging obligation. But when work stress
becomes chronic, it can be overwhelming—and harmful to
both physical and emotional health.
Case Study : A surgeon working for a longer period and
continuous consultation of patients may face fatigue in his
workplace, may also experience depression, anxiety etc.. He
can overcome these problems by doing meditation, yoga,
spending time with nature, pets and family members.
Cause : Not Moving Frequently
Research suggests that when the body is in a static
state for an extended period, a worker has a higher chance
of suffering a musculoskeletal injury. Beyond a
musculoskeletal injury, extended sitting can cause chronic
life-altering injuries such as obesity and type-2 diabetes
Remedy : Get UP Every 30 Minutes
In a recent study published in the Annals of Internal
Medicine, it is suggested that after 30 minutes of sitting, a
person should get up and move. The new research finds that
moving every 30 minutes significantly not only reduces the
risk of suffering a musculoskeletal injury but also the risk
of early mortality.
Case Study : A person working in a company should be
given a break for 30 minutes or an hour so that they can
work properly and they can also maintain their health in a
good manner, which in return helps to increase the
productivity of a company.
CONCLUSION
Habits formed in our daily activities like staring at the
computer, cradling the phone, slouching in a chair or
even just carrying groceries can create painful body
conditions. These conditions can be helped or
prevented by incorporating good ergonomic techniques
into daily routines and work sites.
Use of ergonomically designed tools or equipment and
the introduction of ergonomically formed measures
that help to reduce work-related physical strain
largely contribute to safety assurance as well as
prevention of musculoskeletal disorders such as back
pain and increases in productivity.
