MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

(MI)

INTRODUCTION
• The term "myocardial infarction" focuses
on the myocardium (the heart muscle) and
the changes that occur in it due to the
sudden decrease of circulating blood. The
main change is necrosis (death) of
myocardial tissue.
DEFINITION
•Myocardial infarction (MI), commonly
known as a heart attack, occurs when
blood flow decreases or stops to a part of
the heart, causing damage to the heart
muscle.
INCIDENCES
•Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have
now become the leading cause of death in
India.
•More than 20% of adult population is
affected with MI in India due to improper
lifestyle
RISK FACTOR
 High blood pressure
 High cholesterol levels
 High triglyceride levels
 Diabetes
 Obesity
 Smoking
 Age
• Family history
ETIOLOGY
• Coronary artery disease
• Cardiac disease that reduce blood flow
• Less coronary blood flow
• Atherosclerosis
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
 Pressure or tightness in the chest
 Pain in the chest, back, jaw, and other areas of the upper body
(Angina Pectoris )
 Shortness of breath
 Dyspnea
 Sweating
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Anxiety
 Cough
•Excessive sweating
•Decrease urine output
•Cool skin
•Fast heart rate
•Loss of consciousness
