Introduction
• Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally.

• Estimated number of people living with the disease: around 2.5 million

• Every year, new cancer patients registered: Over 7 lakh

• Cancer-related deaths: 5,56,400

• Most common cancer: Lung cancer (men) and breast cancer followed by cervical

cancer (women).

Cancer registry

• Information system designed for collection, storage, management and

analysis of data on persons with cancer usually covering a hospital or a

group of hospitals.

Population based cancer registry
(PBCRs)

• Collects data on every person with cancer in a defined population,

usually comprising people resident in a well-defined geographical

area.

• Sources: Government Hospitals, Private Hospitals, Nursing Homes,

Clinics, Diagnostic Labs, Imaging centers, and Registrars of Births &

Deaths.

• The coverage is about 10% of the population of India.

Methodology

• The inclusion criteria for registration of cases is that patients who

have lived in the defined areas of Bangalore Urban for a minimum

period of one year at the time of fist diagnosis of cancer.

• Active registration method.

Objectives of POCSS
• To obtain identifying and diagnostic information in all patients in the
particular center/ Institution with cancer cervix/ breast/ head and
neck.

• To record details of clinical stage and types of treatment of patients.

• To have periodic follow-up and record the patient and disease status

National Cancer Registry
Program(NCRP)
• ICMR – December 1981
• The main objectives of this Programs were:
a) To generate reliable data on the magnitude and patterns of cancer.
b) Undertake epidemiological studies based on results of registry data.
c) Help in designing, planning, monitoring and evaluation of cancer
control activities under the National Cancer Control Program
(NCCP).
d) Develop training programs in cancer registration and epidemiology.

Report of cancer registry - India
Consolidated reports of 27 population-based and 17 hospital-based
registries for 2012–14;
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer in India and continues to
increase in incidence.
• Cancers of the uterus, ovary, and lung are increasing in women in
urban areas.
• Overall incidence of cervical cancer is decreasing.
