REDOX REACTIONS
Redox Reaction is also known as Oxidation-reduction Reaction. In this
type of reaction transfer of electrons occurs between the two species. A
chemical reactions where oxidation and reduction both take place
simultaneously are also known as redox reaction.
Oxidation:
• The addition of oxygen to a substance is called oxidation.
• The removal of hydrogen from a substance is called oxidation.
Reduction:
• The addition of hydrogen to a substance is called reduction.
• The removal of oxygen from a substance is called reduction.
Example: When copper oxide is heated with hydrogen, then copper metal
and water are formed.
ZnO + C → Zn + CO
ZnO reduces to Zn → reduction
ZnO is oxidizing agent
C oxidizes to CO → oxidation
C is reducing agent
Effect of oxidation reactions in everyday life:
Oxidation has damaging effect on metals as well as on food. There are two
common effects of oxidation reactions which we observe in daily. These are:
i. Corrosion
ii. Rancidity
Corrosion
The process of slow conversion of metals into
their undesirable compounds due to their
reaction with oxygen, water, acids, gases etc.
present in the atmosphere is called is
corrosion.
The taste and odour of food materials containing fat and oil changes when they
are left exposed to air for long time. This is called Rancidity. It caused due to
oxidation of fat and oil present in food material.
Methods to prevent Rancidity
