SOLAR ENERGY

ALEX ROY JEYA WESLY

INTRODUCTION

 Solar energy is a important source of

renewable energy and its technologies are
broadly characterized as active or passive.

 It is a radiant light and heat from the sun

that is harnessed
TYPES OF SOLAR ENERGY
There are two types of solar energy

 Thermal solar energy

 Electric solar energy

 Thermal solar energy

 It is everywhere
 It lights up our days
 It heats up the earth our bodies and homes
 It dries our cloth
 Electric solar energy

 Energy uses the power of the sun to produce

electricity through solar cells
 It is also called photovoltaic's(PV)
GENERATION OF SOLAR POWER
 solar power is a conversion of sunlight in
to electricity either directly using
photovoltaic's(PV) or indirectly using
concentrated solar power(CSP).
 CSP system used lenses or mirror and
tracking system to focus a large area of
sunlight into a small beam
 PV converts light in to electric current
using photoelectric effect
 Sunlight hits the
solar panel(pv)and
absorbed by
semiconducting
materials such as
silicone.
 Electrons are
knocked loose from
their atoms,which
allow them to flow
through materials
to produce
electricity.
 An array of solar
panels converts solar
energy into dc
current.
 Then the DC enters an
inverter.
 The inverter turns DC
into 120 volt AC.
 The AC power enters
the utility panel in
the house.
 The electricity is then distributed to
appliances or lights in the house .
 When more solar energy is generated it can
be stored in battery.
 When the battery is full the excess
electricity can be exported back into the
utility grid, if your system is connected to it.
 Utility supplied electricity can also be drawn
from the grid when not enough solar energy
is produced.
 The flow of electricity in and out of the
utility grid is measured by a utility metre,
which spins backward and forward .
ADVANTAGES

 Low cost
 Environment friendly
 Renewable resource
 It doesn’t contribute to global warming or
smog
 Low maintenance
LIMITATIONS

 Not suitable for all weather conditions.

 Solar panels required large areas.
 Comparatively low efficient
