MAKING IMs USING OPEN-ENDED TOOLS

IN TEACHING LANGUAGE UNITS

What is IMs?
Instructional materials are the content or
information conveyed within a course. These
include the lectures, readings, textbooks,
multimedia components, and other resources in a
course. These materials can be used in both face-
to-face and online classrooms; however, some must
be modified or redesigned to be effective for the
online environment. The best instructional
materials are aligned with all other elements in the
course, including the learning objectives,
assessments, and activities.
Types of instructional materials

1. Prints Textbooks, pamphlets, handouts, study

guides, manuals

2. Audio Cassettes, microphone, podcast

3. Visual Charts, real objects, photographs,

transparencies

4. Audiovisual Slides, tapes, films, filmstrips, television,

video, multimedia

5. Electronic interactive Computers, graphing calculators, tablets

Main purpose of using
instructional materials
Instructional materials provide the core
information that students will
experience, learn, and apply during a
course. They hold the power to either
engage or demotivate students.
What are the benefits of instructional
materials for teachers?
In addition to supporting learning more generally,
learning materials can assist teachers in an
important professional duty: the differentiation of
instruction. Differentiation of instruction is the
tailoring of lessons and instruction to the different
learning styles and capacities within your
classroom.
What are the characteristics of
a good instructional materials?
1. Being Adaptive

Every student comes to a classroom with his or her own reserve of prior knowledge on the su
bject at hand. Psychologists call this level of knowledge a student’s “proximal zone of d
evelopment.”
2. Focuses On Concepts And Principles

One argument for the non-directive approach to instruction is that students develop lasting
problem-solving skills that aid them in future situations rather than learning to solve onl
y the problem in front of them.
3. Taking Into Account The Student’s Ongoing Cognitive Activities

As an educator, take note of patterns in your student’s learning proces

s in order to customize your teaching as much as possible.
What are the roles of instructional materials?

Instructional materials represent teacher's primary teaching resource, providing the basis for the content
of lessons, a balance of skills taught, and also the kinds of language practice students take part in. In ma
ny situations, instructional materials serve as a supplement for the teacher's instruction.
Effective educational and
