Overview

❆ NEWater processes and recycles treated used water into an ultra-clean, high-grade water.
❆ NEWater undergoes rigourous processes that allows it to even save used water.
❆ There are three main processes to clean used water- microfiltration, reverse osmosis and uv
disinfection.
❆ Non- Potable Use
✧ NEWater is used mainly for industrial and air-con cooling purposes at wafer
fabrication plants, industrial estates and commercial buildings.
✧ However the biggest uses of NEWater are wafer fabrication plants, which require water
quality that is more stringent than drinking water.
❆ Indirect Potable Use
✧ During dry periods, NEWater is added to reservoirs to blend with raw water.
✧ The raw water from the reservoir is treated at the waterworks before it is supplied to
houses as tap water.

Growing from Strength to Strength

✵ PUB launched NEWater to the public in 2003, with the opening of the
first two NEWater plants (in Bedok and Kranji) as well as the NEWater
Visitor Centre.
✵ But today there are 5 NEWater plants supplying up to 40% of Singapore’s
current water needs at Bedok, Kranji, Ulu Pandan, Changi and a visitor
centre in Changi.
✵ By 2060, NEWater is expected to meet up to 55% of Singapore’s future
water demand.

Key strategies of NEWater

✯ Singapore has taken a step ahead by not wasting

the used water rather treat it into ultra-clean, high-
grade reclaimed water which can cushion
Singapore’s water supply against dry weather and
moving Singapore towards water sustainability.

Sustainability

Sustainability of NEWater
✺ NEWater is Singapore’s success story and a pillar of water sustainability that is
produced from treated used water which is sustainable and safe to drink.
✺ By taking a step ahead Singapore has constructed The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System
(DTSS).
✺ The DTSS is a 48km long used water superhighway which conveys used water to
water reclamation plants to be treated and purified into reclaimed water, or discharged
into the sea.
✺ Phase 1 construction of the DTSS is completed.
✺ Phase 2 which will cover the western part of Singapore is targeted for completion in
2022.
