Relative clauses
• We use relative clauses to join two English sentences or to give more information about
something. Relative clauses can be essential or non-essential parts of a sentence:

• Defining clause: tells us which specific person or thing we are talking about. If this
clause is removed, the meaning of a sentence changes. It is not separated by commas or
parentheses.
• The woman who visited me in the hospital was very kind.
• The umbrella that I bought last week is already broken.
• Non-defining clause: gives us more information about the person or
thing we are talking about. If the clause is removed, the meaning
remains the same.
• The farmer, who is called Fred, sold us 10 pounds of potatoes.
• Elephants, which are the largest land mammals, live in herds of 10 or
more adults.
To introduce relative clauses
• To introduce relative clauses we
need to use the following relative
pronouns:
• For people we use who or that:
He is the man who was murdered.
They are the people that were
involved.
• For things we use which or that:
Her marriage is the only thing
which makes her happy.
Our house is the place that we
enjoy the most.
• For places we use where:
That’s the place where they found
the body.
The city square is the place where
we first met.
