INTRODUCTION
OLED
 A flexible organic light emitting diode (FOLED) is a type of
organic light-emitting diode (OLED) incorporating a flexible
plastic substrate on which the
electroluminescent organic
semiconductor is deposited.

 This enables the device to be bent or rolled while operating.

 Currently the focus of research in industrial and academic

groups, flexible OLEDs form one method of fabricating a
rollable display.

ARCHITECTURE

Fig. Architecture of OLED 5

How do OLEDs work?

An OLED is made by placing a series of organic thin films

between two conductors.
When electrical current
is applied, a bright light
is emitted.

 The organic
molecules are
electrically
conductive as a
result of
delocalization of
pi electrons caused
by conjugation over
the entire molecule.

 The voltage bias from 2.5 to 20V is applied.
 The Active layers are very thin so the electric field in the active
layers is very high about 105-107V/cm.
 Therefore the charge carriers inject across the active layer
interfaces.
 The electrons are injected from
the cathode and holes from
the anode.

 The charge carriers meet and recombine.
 In this recombination process the energy is released and the
molecule or a polymer segment in which the recombination occurs,
reaches an exited state.

Continued…..
 Some molecule or polymer segment release energy as photon or heat.
 The suitable dopants are added, which release the energy more
efficiently as photons.

COMPARISON
OLED vs. LCD
OLED displays have the following advantages over LCD displays:
 Improved image quality - better contrast, higher brightness,
fuller viewing angle, a wider colour range and much faster
refresh rates.
 Lower power consumption
 Simpler design that enables ultra-thin, flexible and transparent
displays
 Better durability and can operate in a broader temperature range

  OLED and LED
OLED displays have the following advantages over LCD displays:
 Thinner and lighter
 They provide very wide and consistent colour no matter where
you are seated in the room.
 Quite energy efficient, besting all other flat panels in low power
consumption.
 make more colours

CONCLUSION
For the coming years, more development in Lifetime and
improving power efficiency will be required. The roots of
device with less power consumption will spreads greatly.
Further power consumption may be reduced by controlling
the coupling and sense resistance. Hope that the
development reviewed in this PPT open up a course to the
practical use of OLED as lighting source in illumination
world.
