Overview 2021
Assessment 1 overall aims

Demonstrate that you can understand and analyse language from one or more
sociolinguistic perspectives and apply this to your teaching.

Show that you can think critically about language in society.

Demonstrate you can write in a formal academic register and organise your
ideas so that they are clear and easy to follow at the text, paragraph and
 

sentence level.
Assessment 2 overall aims

• Demonstrate that you understand the main sociolinguistic


concepts covered in the course and apply this to your
teaching.
• Show that you can identify and evaluate language from a
sociolinguistic perspective.
• Demonstrate that you can write a short essay using clear and
appropriate language.
 
A2 Instructions

• This is a time-limited assessment. You have up to 78 hours to answer FOUR questions and
submit.
• Write 400 - 500 words for each answer.
• There are 10 marks for each question.
• The examples of language you use must be from your own linguistic repertoire. You can
invent conversations or transcribe from memory.
• You can use examples from any language you speak but you need to translate this into
English.
• The answers you provide must be in your own sentences and paragraphs. Do not copy
sentences directly from the lecture notes, textbooks, or any other sources.
• You can copy key terms and expressions.
The content

• Use key terms and concepts from the unit:


• Show that you know the language that
sociolinguists use to analyse language
in society.
• Show that you can use and understand
the key words and concepts from the
unit.
• Provide evidence for your ideas:
• Examples of real language in use.
• References to unit sources.
 
What and how to write

• Be clear and concise in your written response:


• One sentence for introduction and conclusion.
• Avoid long complex sentences unless you are a very confident academic
writer.
• Don’t repeat ideas, develop them.
• Cite as you write.
• Cite and reference using APA 7th style.
• Provide evidence for your claims.
Example questions

• Name the process (or processes) of semantic shift that has taken place with each of
these English words.
• Describe some key features one Dialect of British English.
• Explain the main ways in which the Vietnamese/English/Other language is changing.
• Analyze a conversation from a sociolinguistic perspective e.g. social dimension of
language such as gender, speech act theory, age, accent, dialect, register, style.
• Compare the vernacular use of American English with its standard form.
