What are Demonstrative Pronouns?

They are words used to point to a specific


thing or place.
Examples: This, these, that and those

used to Point to Objects

Kore, Sore and Are


This Kore (object near the speaker)
Ex: Kore wa nan desu ka? ( What is this?)
That sore ( object near the listener)
Ex: Sore wa nan desu ka? ( What is that ?)
That are ( object far from the speaker and listener)
Ex: Are wa nan desu ka? (What is that ?)
Sample sentences

Kore wa watashi no kaban desu. This is my bag .


Sore wa anata no kaban desu. That is your bag.
Are wa Anril-san no kaban desu. That is Abril’s bag.

Note: When asking the question, “ Which one?’ use the word “Dore”
Anata no kaban wa dore desu ka? Which is your bag?
Formal Equivalents of Kore, Sore, and Are
The formal equivalents of kore , sore and are used when we talk to someone older, of higher rank
or when we talk with people in formal setting like at school during lecture, conference ,
workplace, etc.

Demonstrative Adjectives
Kono, Sono and Ano

The words This, these, that and those in English can also be used as Adjectives .
They are used as adjectives if they are immediately followed by nouns.
Examples:

That orange (over there) is cheap. That is cheap. That is an orange.
