    Blood flows continuously through a closed circulatory system of vessels in vertebrates. In mammals, blood passes through the heart twice in one circuit, with the heart having four chambers - two upper atria and two lower ventricles. Oxygen-depleted blood returns to the right atrium from the body and lungs via the superior and inferior vena cava, and is then pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery for oxygenation before returning to the left atrium via the pulmonary veins to be pumped back out to the body through the aortic arch.

    around the body. In vertebrates, the blood flows through
    a closed system of blood vessels. In mammals, there is a
    double circulation in which blood passes through the
    heart twice in one complete circuit.
