PROJECT REPORT

ON

BREEDING OF GOAT
INTRODUCTION
India has the largest goat population in the world. Their number
has increased at the annual rate of approximately 3.2% annum,
which appears to be the highest rate among all species of
livestock in the country. The worlds goat production in around
696 million (FAO 98) and is increasing at the rate of 2.34 percent
per annum. The population of goats in Asia and Africa is around
66 percent and 26 percent respectively. Goats constitute a very
important species of livestock in our country, mainly on account
of the short generation intervals, higher rate of prolificacy and the
ease with which the goats as well as their products can be
marketed. Goats sustain themselves on sparse forage and extreme
climatic conditions. The goat population in the country is about
128 million (23% of total animal population in the country). In
spite of about (37.5%) animal slaughter rate and 15% mortality,
goat population has increased with an annual growth rate of
3.4%. They produce about 1.684 million tones of milk, 0.48
million tones of meat, 0.085 million tones pashmina and 0.109
million kg skin in addition to 390 thousand metric tones of
manure.
