BSHM-1A HISTORY AND ORIGIN Bataraza is named after a locally influential Muslim Chieftain, Datu Bataraza Narrazid who was the father of the town's first mayor, Datu Sapiodin Narrazid. Datu Sapiodin Narrazid was a former mayor of the municipality of Brooke's Point, the mother municipality of Bataraza. The municipality of Bataraza was created on June 18, 1961 by virtue of Republic Act 3425. Until january 1, 1964, by the virtue of republic act No. 3435 authored by then Congressman Gaudencio Abordo mandating the division of brooke’s point into two district municipalities. The northern portion of the municipality of Brooke’s point and southern part was named the Municipality of Bataraza, in honor of the late Datu Bataraza Narrazid. by a popular mandate, Datu Sapiodin became the first Mayor of bataraza. it officially functioned as an independent municipality on January 1, 1964 and established its seat of municipal government in barangay Tarusan by virtue of a municipal resolution with concurrence from the provincial board. SULTAN HARUN NARRAZID, the great negotiator from Sulu, settled in Palawan where the Spanish Government entrusted him the rule of the muslim population of the Southern Islands like Balabac and Bataraza. The Municipality of Bataraza was named after the eldest son of Sultan Harun Narrazid, Datu Bataraza Narrazid. (the one seated) Datu Sapiodin Narrazid was the first Mayor of Bataraza. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION Bataraza is located on the southernmost tip of Palawan Island, approximately 225 kilometres (140 mi) from Puerto Princesa City and about five to six hours by land. It has total land area of 957 km². NUMBER OF BARANGAYS Bataraza is politically subdivided into 22 barangays: Bono-Bono Puring Bulalacao Rio Tuba Buliluyan Sandoval Culandanum Sapa Igang-Igang Sarong Inogbong Sumbiling Iwahig Tabud Malihud Tagnato Malitub Tagolango Marangas (Poblacion) Taratak Ocayan Tarusan (Bulosan) Rio Tuba is one of the populated barangays of Bataraza and known for its nickel mineral reserves. The primary mine site of Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation is located within its jurisdiction. The barangay was founded by Anselmo Dela Chica in the early 1920s, also the first Chieftain. Then in 1968, a small group of geologist and engineers came and found out the vast nickel deposit. Then a year or two followed the foundation of the RTNMC (Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation). Lalatuan Falls Isla Puting Buhangin
Kapangyan Falls Pirates Island Gangub Cave Tagbila Sand Bar Ursula Island Bird Sanctuary Tabod Cave Capayas Island Kapangyan Falls and Lalatuan Falls. Tucked in the forests of Barangay Malihud in Bataraza, the southernmost municipality of mainland Palawan are two of its precious wonders, Kapangyan Falls and Lalatuan Falls. GANGUB CAVE The Gangub Cave is also known to the locals as Panuyon Cave. It was taken from the root word 'Panoy', a native Palaw'an term which means 'bats' or 'paniki' in tagalog. Gangub Cave is a nice destination to visit on a sunny day like this. This is the largest cave in the limestone karst of Sandoval. It is about 40 to 50 m above sea level and has 3 openings. Palaw’ans named the cave Panuyon after the type of bats found inside. The largest entrance is about 20 m high and 10 m wide. Inhabitants of the area recently transformed the cave into a Christian church. CAPAYAS ISLAND

A bird sanctuary with pristine white sand and not a beach
resort in sight, Ursula Island is a small island located offshore from the municipality of Bataraza, in the Philippines that invites you to its shores, but forbids you from going any further. This tiny island protects a number of rare bird species by only allowing visitors to set foot on the beach. Ursula Island is located at the municipality of Bataraza in the southwest of Sulu Sea and southeast of Rio Tuba of Bataraza a town in the southern part of the province of Palawan. It has a total land mass of 17. 2 hectares and was established as a Bird Sanctuary in 1960 to promote eco- tourism in the area. The southern side of the oval-shaped island is surrounded by a wide coral reef. There are 150,000 migratory birds that use the island as their refuge during the cold winter months on the mainland China. Due to illegal human activities the numbers of birds dwelling in the area have been declining. FESTIVITIES AND CELEBRATIONS The Municipality of Bataraza was declared as the Pineapple Capital of the Province of Palawan. After it was declared, the municipality of Palawan celebrated the first Pineapple festival in 2019 wherein they proudly present their sweet pineapples and hole various activities. This festival is held every July 15-18. The town has approximately 600 hectares of pineapple fields, the most was located in Barangay Bulalacao. The government expects more people to come to enjoy the festivity and boost their tourism industry.
