CLEANING AND DISINFECTION IN

PUBLIC SPACES AGAINST

COVID-19
Cleaning and Disinfection

Cleaning
 Refers to the removal of germs, dirt and
impurities from surfaces

 Does not kill germs, but by removing them,

it lowers their numbers and risk of
spreading infection
Cleaning and Disinfection

Disinfection
 Refers to using chemicals to kill germs on
surfaces

 Does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or

remove germs, but by killing germs on surface
after cleaning, it further lower the risk of
spreading infection
Disinfection Solutions
diluted household bleach solutions
 Use bleach containing 5.25%–8.25% sodium hypochlorite.
Do not use a bleach product if the percentage is not in
this range or is not specified.
 Follow the manufacturer’s application instructions for the
surface, ensuring a contact time of at least 1 minute.
 Ensure proper ventilation during and after application.
 Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration
date.
 Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other
cleanser. This can cause fumes that may be very
dangerous to breathe in.
In all settings
Clean and disinfect frequently touched
surfaces and objects daily

 Use detergent or soap and water prior to

disinfection
 Spraying of cleaning or disinfectant
solution on a surface NOT RECOMMENDED
 Use pump-action containers that dispense
liquid to apply prepared cleaning or
disinfection solutions
In all settings
 For soft surfaces such as carpeted floors, rugs, and
curtains, remove visible contamination, then launder
or clean with appropriate products

 Consider putting a wipeable cover on electronics.

Follow manufacturer’s instruction for cleaning and
disinfecting. If no guidance, use alcohol-based wipes
containing at least 70% alcohol.

 All left over disinfectant solution must be discarded/

disposed and remade every 24 hrs
In Community Spaces
 Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces should be done daily

 Many disinfectants are active against enveloped viruses (COVID-

19)
ex: 70% ethyl alcohol, sodium hypochlorite

 Mop floors at least once a day with regular soap and water
(using the two or three-bucket system of mopping)
2-bucket (1 bucket of water and 1 bucket of
detergent/disinfectant solution)
3-bucket (1 bucket detergent (cleaning); 1 bucket water
(rinse) and 1 bucket of disinfectant solution)
Community spaces: if someone in the
building is sick
REMEMBER!!!
 Close off all areas used by the Wear disposable or impermeable
sick person. Open outside doors gloves and gowns for all tasks
and windows to increase air Additional PPE might be required
circulation in the area based on cleaning/disinfectant
products used and risk of splash
Ex. Offices, bathrooms, common
areas, shared electronic like If there is a shortage of PPEs,
wash your hand often
tablets, touch screens, keyboards,
remote controls, and ATM machines Always wash immediately after
removing gloves and after
 Clean and Disinfect after 24 hrs contact with an ill person
if area can be vacated or
immediately if this is not possible
 Once area has been appropriately disinfected, it can be
opened for use.
 Workers without close contact with the person who is
sick can return to work immediately after disinfection.
 If more than 7 days since the person who is sick visited or
used the facility, additional cleaning and disinfection is
not necessary.
 Continue routing cleaning and disinfection. This
includes everyday practices that businesses and
communities normally use to maintain a healthy
environment.
Toilets in Public Spaces
 Flush toilets should operate properly and
have functioning drain traps
 Liddown to prevent droplet splatter and
aerosol clouds if possible.
 should be cleaned and disinfected at least
twice daily by a trained cleaner wearing
PPE
Handling used cleaning materials
 Clean utility gloves or heavy duty, reusable plastic aprons w/
soap and water and then decontaminate them with a strong
chlorine solution after each use.

 Single-use gloves and gowns should be discarded after each use.

 Mops and cleaning cloths should be laundered or rinsed in a clean

disinfectant solution, then thoroughly dried before reuse.
 Dispose grey water in drains connected to septic tank or
sewerage
General Misting and Outdoor spraying
 Droplets that may contain coronavirus DO NOT remain
suspended in the air

 Spraying to kill in the air is NOT NEEDED at this time

 Spraying can cause any pathogens to be dispersed

further from the direct application of a spray.

 Spraying disinfectants over large area and repeatedly may

cause environmental pollution and should be avoided.
Misting and Spraying of Individuals
 The spraying of individuals or groups is not recommended
under any circumstances (DOH DC 2020-0172)

 Spraying an individual or group with chemical disinfectants

or detergents is physically and psychologically harmful
and does not limit the spread of COVID-19

 Even if a person is infected with the COVID-19 virus,

spraying part of the body does not kill the virus inside the
body and may worsen the clinical condition of the
individual.
