Reaction of metals with
oxygen and water
UNIT 10.1
Reactions of metals in air
When a metal reacts with oxygen, a metal oxide forms.
The general equation for this reaction is:

metal + oxygen → metal oxide.

E.g. Magnesium + oxygen magnesium oxide
Metal oxides are basic (if they dissolve in water they form alkaline solutions)
