Juan Luna, a great Filipino
artist, made his mark not only in
the Philippines but also in the
international art scene. Juan Luna
was the measure of Filipino artistic
excellence in the 19th century.
Aside from playing a crucial role in
the reform movement against
Spain, he was also a great and
important painter during the late
1800s. He won recognition in
Europe when he received a gold
medal for winning first place at the
1884 Madrid Art Exposition for his
most famous painting Spoliarium.
Spoliarium, 1884. Spoliarium depicts
bloody carcasses of slave gladiators
being dragged away from the arena
where they had entertained their Roman
masters, with their lives.
