This is the rhetorical technique of nicknaming. By using a nickname that has certain connotations
or hightlights of a certain quality we can create an impression about a person .
SOME TECHNIQUES OF USING ANTONOMASIA

To use someone’s name as a nickname for some one else. For example,
supposed you have a brother who is extremely naughty, while he is
breaking stuff you yell: “cut it out Tarzan!”.
THE NAME “TARZAN” DEPICTS A WILD PERSON
JUST USE WORDS SUCH AS MR.___, MS.___ THEN ADD THE QUALITY

For exmaple, two women discussing men:

Normal sentence:
“He’s such a good guy. I enjoy his company so much! I just hope he’s the right guy for me.”
With the addition of antonomasia, we can emphasize the quality she hopes to find in this man:

Sentence with Antonomasia:

“He’s such a good guy. I enjoy his company so much! I just hope he’s Mr. Right.“
Giving a man the title “Mr. Right” is an everyday example of antonomasia in conversation.
THE IMPORTANCE OF USING
ANTONOMASIA
Antonomasia can provide someone with a strong epithet which further
celebrates and memorializes their great deeds.
In the
The past
Philosopher The Great Commoner The Bard
antonomasia would be used to designate class members,
as oftentimes people’s names were linked to their
professions
In this way, the past is similar to the present, as we tend to
use antonomasia purely for enjoyment and fun with
nicknames. Because antonomasia is used
by humorists and comedians,
you should pay attention to
the context to avoid
misunderstanding and
offending other people .
Reduplication
DEFINITION
• Reduplication is the process of forming a new word by doubling a morpheme, usually
with a change vowel or initial consonant.

EX: pooh-pooh, dilly-dally, hanky-panky, huble-buble, fifty-fifty

• The basic, originating morpheme is most frequently the second half, like
dilly-dally, but it may be the first half, like tick tock, or both halves, like
singsong, or neither half, like boogie-woogie
• The term “Reduplication” consists of three meanings:
1. The process
2. The result of the process (that is, the new
word)
3. The element repeated

• The repeated element is the basic or originating

morpheme
• The new word is called twin-words

TWIN-WORDS AND TYPE OF
REDUPLICATION
TWIN-WORDS
 DEFINITION
Twin-words can be devided into three classes,
leaving only a small residue of irregular forms.
 EXAMPLES:
Bling-bling
Bye-bye
Knock-knock
So-so
TYPE OF REDUPLICATION

1. TOTAL REDUPLICATION (Repetition Without

Change)
2. PARTIAL REDUPLICATION (Change of Initial
Consonant)
3. ORIGINATING MORPHEME (Change of Vowel)
1. TOTAL REDUPLICATION
 The base morpheme is repeated without change
 Examples:
 Clop-clop and tick-tick
 This is the smallest class.
 The twin-words in this group are often onomatopoeic.
 They represent sounds, like gobble-gobble and chug-
chug
2. PARTIAL REDUPLICATION
 The base morpheme is repeated with a change of
initial consonant.
 Examples:
 Fuddy-duddy
 Tootsie-wootsie
 Razzle-dazzle
 Roly-poly
3. ORIGINATING MORPHEME
 The base morpheme is repeated with a change of vowel.
 Examples:
 Zig-zag, tick-tock, ping-pong, …
 The first vowel is usually high front lax vowel / ɪ/, and the second is a
low vowel /æ/, /a/, or /ɔ/.
 Often Second Half as: dilly-dally
 First Half as: tick-tock
 Both Halves as: sing-song
 Neither Halves as: boogie-woogie
3. ORIGINATING MORPHEME
 Ablaut/vocalic reduplication
The first vowel is almost always a high vowel and the
reduplicated vowel is a low vowel
 Examples: chit-chat, zig-zag, tick-tock, …
 Rhyming reduplication
The duplicated element rhymes with the original element in
the phrase
 Examples: willy-nilly, walkie-talkie, raggle-taggle, …
