System Planning & Hazard

Analysis
Sizing the System
• SURVEY THE HAZARD
Local application?
Total flood?
• Hazard type?
 Prefab booth or machine-Model#
• Hazard Dimension?
 Sketch w/ all information
-walls, doors, windows
-anything interfere w/piping-discharge
Sizing the System
• Types of Fires
 Surface Fires
flammable liquids
gases
solids
 Deep-Seated Fires
involves solids - subject to smoldering
Note: Local Application can only be used on surface fires.
Sizing the System
• Hazard Atmosphere?
 Explosion Proof?
• Hazardous Materials?
 Class B Material
Concentration requirements
 Material CO2 is not effective on:
Class D Combustible Metals
Chemical that produce own O2
Metal Hydrides
Sizing the System
• Ventilation Consideration
 Shut Down or dampered, or both,
before or simultaneously with start of
discharge.

 If not shut down, volume of air

moved must be added to enclosure
volume.
Sizing the System
• Ventilation Consideration
 For ventilation systems that cannot
be shut down, additional CO2 shall
be added in an amount computed
by dividing the volume of air
moved during the liquid discharge
period by the flooding factor. This
shall be multiplied by the material
conversion factor.
Sizing the System
• Unclosable Openings?
For Surface Fire
 Must be compensated for w/extra
lbs. of CO2 equal to anticipated loss
during a one minute hold time
Sizing the System
• Unclosable Openings?
For Deep Seated Fires
 Any opening that cannot be closed
at time of extinguishment must be
compensated for w/extra lbs. of CO2
equal in volume to the anticipated
loss during the extinguishing period
 Possible extended discharge?
Sizing the System
• Unclosable Openings?
For Deep Seated Fires
 Any opening that cannot closed at
time of extinguishment must be
restricted to bordering or actually
in the ceiling if the opening
exceeds the pressure relief
venting requirement.
Sizing the System
• Unclosable Openings?
Opening into other area?
 Automatic closures-pressure trips

(Screening Nozzles)
Prevent fire from spreading
into adjacent areas
Sizing the System
• Temperature Range
>200 F (93 C) - increase agent
qty by 1% for each 5 degrees
above 200 F (93 C)
<0 F (-18 C) - increase agent
qty by 1% for each 1 degree
below <0 F (-18 C)
System Planning
TANK LOCATION - High Pressure

• Clean, open area preferably indoors or sheltered

• Close to hazard but not exposed to hazard
• Secure
Sizing the System
• Temperature Range
Agent Cylinders
Located in an area w/temperature
between 0 F and 130 F (-18 C to 54 C)
(32°F to 120°F for Local Application Systems)

Detection & Control?

Usually Located in an area w/temperature
between 32 F and 120 F (0 C to 49 C)
Sizing the System
• Other Factors
Handicapped Personnel?
Response time - Fire Dept.?
Reserve System?
Discharge Test?
Authority Having Jurisdiction?
Detector Spacing?
Type Detector Acceptable?
Audible &/or Visual Alarms?
Multiple Hazards

Enough CO2 liquid for the hazard

(or group of inter-exposed hazards)
needing the largest quantity
(Distributed through selector valves)
