INTRODUCTION OF AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES

HYDRAULICS
Hydraulics, derived from the Greek word hydro = water, refers,

in a scientific sense, to the science of still and moving fluids .

Hydraulic systems convert mechanical energy into hydraulic

energy, transport it in this form in an open or closed-loop
controlled way and then re-convert it into mechanical energy.

For the conversion of energy, hydraulic pumps are used on the

primary side and hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors on

the secondary side.

Applications of Hydraulic systems
Industrial: Plastic processing machineries, steel making and primary metal extraction applications,
machine tool industries, paper industries, loaders, crushes, textile machineries, robotic systems
etc.

Mobile hydraulics: Tractors, irrigation system material handling equipment, commercial

vehicles, building and construction machineries and drilling rigs etc.

Automobiles: It is used in the systems like breaks, shock absorbers, steering system, wind
shield, lift and cleaning etc.

Marine applications: It mostly covers ocean going vessels, fishing boats and navel equipment.

Aerospace equipment: landing gear, breaks, flight control and transmission etc.
PNEUMATICS

Pneumatics is a branch of engineering that makes used of gas or

pressurized air. Pneumatic systems used in industry are commonly
powered by compressed air or compressed inert gases.

A pneumatic system controlled through manual or automatic solenoid

valves is selected when it provides a lower cost, more flexible, or
safer alternative to electric motors and actuators.

Pneumatics has applications like Automatic door system in buses, Air

brakes on buses and trucks & low weight material handling systems.
SENSORS

Sensors are signal converters which change a non-electrical magnitude into an electrical magnitude.
The output is generally a signal that is converted to human-readable display at the sensor location or
transmitted electronically over a network for reading or further processing.

They are embedded in our bodies, automobiles, airplanes, cellular telephones, radios, chemical plants,
industrial plants and countless other applications.

Different types of sensors

Inductive sensor capacitive sensor magnetic sensor through beam sensor
PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC)
A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is special form of
microprocessor based controller that uses programmable memory to
store instruction and to implement the functions such as logic sequencing
,timing , counting and arithmetic in order to control the machine and
process

The primary function of the PLC was to perform the sequential

operations that were previously implemented with relays.

The PLC controls industrial machines and processes. In different areas of

the industry, PLC are being applied, e.g.: materials handling, packaging,

milling, grinding, filling, sorting, weighing...etc.

DRIVES AND CONTROLS
Systems employed for motion control are called Drives. Drives employing electric motor are called
electric drives.
Motion control is required in large numbers of industrial & domestic application like transportation
system, rolling mills, paper machine, textile mills, fans, robots, packaging etc.
The servo drive then compares the actual motor status with the commanded motor status.

There are 3 types of drives

 Hydraulic drive
 Pneumatic drive
 Electrical drive
PNEUMATIC POWER STEERING
INTRODUCTION
 Pneumatic machinery are machines and tools which use air power to do work.
  In this type of machine, high pressure Compressed air is transmitted throughout the
machine to various Pneumatic motors and Pneumatic cylinders.
 The air is controlled directly or automatically by control valves and distributed through
hoses and tubes.

OBJECTIVE
The popularity of Pneumatic machinery is due to the very large amount of power that can be
transferred through small tubes and flexible hoses, and the high power density and wide array
of actuators that can make use of this power. These machinery are based on the Cylinders,
Compressor and Pump.
WORKING
 Pneumatic cylinders are pressurized by Pneumatic pressure and get their power for the
Pneumatic air under pressure.
 They transform the air’s energy to linear work. A Pneumatic cylinders works in a
Pneumatic system and is the motor side of this system.
 The generator side of the air Pneumatic system is the pump or Compressor that brings a
fixed or regulated air flow into the system.
 The Pneumatic cylinder initiates the pressure of the air, which can never be larger than the
pressure that is asked by the load.
 The cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel, in which a piston connected to a piston rod is
moving. The barrel is closed by the cylinder bottom at the bottom side and by the cylinder
head at the side where the piston rod comes out of the cylinder.
 Mounting bracket are mounted to the cylinder bottom as well as the piston rod. The piston has
sliding rings and seals. The piston divides the inside of the cylinder in two chambers, the
bottom chamber and the piston rod side chamber.
 If the air is pumped into the piston rod side chamber and the air from the piston area flows
back to the air reservoir without pressure, the pressure in the piston rod area chamber is Load.
 In such a way the Pneumatic cylinder can push and pull.By pumping Pneumatic air to the
bottom side of the Pneumatic cylinder, the piston rod starts moving out.
 The piston pushes the air in the other chamber back to the air reservoir. If we assume that the
air pressure in the piston rod chamber is zero, the pressure in the cylinder is now Force/Piston
area.
 When the vehicle weight increases, the power required to steer the vehicle also increases. Most
of the vehicles are have fluid power for steering. In this project pneumatic power (compressed
air) is used in place of Mechanical power.
ADVANTAGES
 Preventing the wheels from transferring the load to the steering wheel.
 Reducing the driver’s fatigue.
 Low input torque and continuous steering function.

DISADVANTAGES
 Design is complication.
 Increased in cost.

APPLICATION
 Used in all light duty vehicles like cars and also in some trucks.
OUTCOMES
 Very easy to drive vehicle than fluid power.
 No moving parts.
 Easy Maintenance.
 No separate drive is required to drive the compressor as the brake system
has the compressed air for operation.

CONCLUSION
 By studying all these we can conclude that the power steering is necessary for the modern
cars.
 Now a days we can see almost all cars having a power steering.
 It provides good handling to the driver, gives better comfort, and make him less fatigue.
Technical outcomes

• The internship has provided the exposure of concepts studied in our academics in real
time applications.
• An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
• I got to know about system behind automated industries.
• An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
• An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
• The ability to work in more significant application domains.
• The recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning.
• The ability to validate, implement, apply and maintain software systems
• Gained a knowledge about industrial work standards and its process
Non-technical skills
I learned a lot about the areas of automation technologies. I did not have totally clear about the
activities I could have done to reach my learning goals

Time management was another big challenge during the course of internship. At the beginning the
training went on very slow and we realized that the time left out for the completion of the
internship is approaching and managed to complete the work in time.
