ROAD DESIGN “USING

SOFTWARE”.

Presented by:
Sujit .Kumar .Jha.
(Design Engineer , PMC Himachal Pradesh)
DESIGN FLOW CHART
 Feasibility Survey
Transect walk (Use GPS)
 Public representative
 Land owners

 Technical team

Selection of Alignment
Forest Clearance Paper
 Marking the area on location map
Gifting of Private Land documents.
 Finalizing of plot and marking on land map.
DESIGN FLOW CHART
 Detail Survey (Use Total Station.)
Methods of detail survey.
 Strip Survey
 Width of “Right of Way” along the alignment

corridor Strip survey is carried out.

 Details of Alignments can be setout at field or at

office.
 Detail of profile, Cross section and Plan are

prepared from the contour developed by the data

collected through strip survey.
STRIP SURVEY CENTER LINE SURVEY
DESIGN FLOW CHART
 Centerline Survey
Centerline survey carried out for Plan and

profile preparation.
Detail of cross section is taken by using

Stepping method or
Using Total station

Details of Alignments can be setout

at field or at office.

 Above site list Different road design software and link to
the concerned developer site.
 Software has their own merits and operational capacity.

 Accessing our need to select the proper design software.

SELECTION OF SOFTWARE
 User friendly
Require less training period
Interactive design features.
 Plan-Profile and Cross section need to be inter
connected.
Useful to design as per our Topography.
Do not required high configuration computer
system.
Easy field data importing system
SELECTION OF SOFTWARE
 Updates and Customization
Easy update system
Customization Possible as per the requirement.
 Value for money
Multi tasking software has more cost.
It is important to know our need and select the
software.
ROAD_MAGIC
 It is a Interactive “Road Design software.”
 Easy to learn and operate.

 It import survey data from Microsoft XL file or user

can directly feed the survey data into this.
 It accept data of Theodolite, Total Station, GPS or
any survey equipment which produce X,Y,Z
coordinate.
 It also accept Abney level, clinometers, Dumpy level
data with stepping cross section.
ROAD_MAGIC
It produce
 Drawing
PLAN

L-SECTION

CROSS SECTION
 Quantity
Earth Work volume (Cut/Fill)
Gabion quantity

Stone masonry Quantity

Drain Type and Quantity

Cement masonry quantity

STEP OF DESIGNING
HOW IT HELPS TO THE
DESIGNER
 Consider this Design
 At Chainage 0+053
(peg no-7) a heavy
Gabion wall (13.5 m2 of
Gabion boxes to get .98
m width on filling
section) is required to
gain a final road width.
HOW IT HELPS TO THE DESIGNER
 Centerline shifted to left and gabion structure is
removed.
 This effect plan and
point is shifted from
curve path of IP-1
 To adjust this it is
necessary to shift
nearby peg number of 7
such as 4,5,6,8,9 and/or
change the curve radius
and /or IP location.
COST ANALYSIS OF DESIGN
WORK
 Total Gabion Area removed = 13.5 m2
 Length of Structure = 15 m.

 Total Gabion Volume removed = 202.5 m3

 Cost of gabion structure (assume)=NRs.2000/m3

 Total cost saved due to single cross section

editing = NRs. 405,000 .00
 This analysis boost the design optimization of
Road_magic.
