Maintenance of fish brood stock

N. BISHWARJIT
M.F.SC. 1ST YEAR

INTRODUCTION
 Brood stock are adult fish used for breeding.
 Hatcheries cannot keep brood stock.

 Generally 2 to 3 years advisable.

 Selecting “professional brood stock”

Gupta,S.D.et al,1995
 Brood stock cost a lot.

 The cost of feeding is high.

 They take up a lot of space

 Availability of quality seed depends on
quality, quantity & timely availability of
Brood stock

 Well managed brood stock gives > 90 %

breeding success
SOURCE OF BROOD FISH
 Farmed

1. Fast growth
2. Pigmentation
3. Shape
4. Domesticated

 Wild
COLLECTION OF BROODSTOCK
 Handled very carefully

 Drag-net early in the morning

 Net enclosures or hapas in the same water body

for 1 to 2 hours.
SELECTION OF BROOD STOCK

 Body shape & colour

 Skeletal deformities

 Normal behaviour

 Best growth and FCR

 Largest size among age group

TRANSPORTATION
 Fiberglass containers

 Oxygen saturation

 Anesthetics added at sedation level

 Short duration density 30 Kg/cu. M

 Longer duration 10-15 Kg/ Cu.m

SOME IMPORTANT TIPS FOR TRANSPORTING FISH:
 The tank should be completely full of water so the
fish do not get injured

 Puttinga hapa in a tank help to get the fish out

without stress

 The water should be the same temperature or slightly

cooler than their pond

 If you bubble oxygen slowly through the water the

fish will always have enough
QUARANTINE

 Prophylactic treatment

 Eliminates parasites, seals wound &

abrasion

 Medicated bath

 2-3 months
BROOD RAISING
 Rectangular ponds
area 0.2-0.5 ha
depth 1.5m
 Remove aquatic weeds, predators and weed
fishes
MOC @2500kg/ha
Bleaching powder @300kg/ha
 Stocking Density @1500kg/ha
FEEDING OF BROOD FISH
 Formulated feed
30% protein (Gupta,S.D. et al,1995)
8-10% crude lipid
Groundnut-cake 70 kg
Rice bran 28.4 kg
Common salt 1.5 kg
Trace elements* 0.1 kg
Vitamin C 10 g
Vitamin E 3g

*ferrous sulphate 50g, CuSO4 8g, zinc oxide 6.7g, manganese sulphate 15.4g, potassium
iodide 4.2g, cobalt chloride 2g, calcium carbonate 13.7g
 Catla-powdered feed preferred

 Rohu-semi soaked feed

 Mrigal,
Grass carp- soaked feed ball
recommended
MEASURES TO BE FOLLOWED DURING
MANAGEMENTS:

 Infected fish should isolated

 Routine prophylactic measures
 Maintenance of optimum water quality
 Disease free/ disease resistant brood stock is of
paramount importance
- screening and selection of healthy founder
population of brooders based on molecular markers,
maturation in grow out, completion of maturation in
indoor facility, breeding and spawning in a
controlled recirculatory system,
