PLANT NURSERY
 Nursery is a place where plants are grown, nurtured and sold out. Generally, various commercial crop

growers require a good quality saplings or grafts of genuine type.

 A nursery is a place where plants are propagated and grown to a desired age. They include retail

nurseries which sell to the general public, wholesale nurseries which sell only to businesses such as

other nurseries and to commercial gardeners, and private nurseries which supply the needs of

institutions or private estates.

 Nurseries grow plants in open fields, on container fields, in tunnels or greenhouses. In open fields,

nurseries grow decorative trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials.

 School Gardens are found in many countries, in different forms and sizes, with

varying aims. In most cases, the School Garden is an area of land within the school

grounds or nearby.

 Vegetables, flowers, medicinal plants, trees, bushes and many other plants are

usually grown. Occasionally, small animals are also kept in the School Garden, such

as ducks, rabbits, chickens, goats and even fish. In cities where schools have limited

space or lack open earth, the School Garden can consist of plants growing in

containers.
 The Department of Education (DepEd) has revived its School Inside a Garden

(SIGA) program that aims to establish nurseries of endemic and indigenous

trees and flowering plants in public schools nationwide.

 The revised SIGA program aims to focus primarily on making school campuses

throughout the Philippines green and colorful by planting trees and flowering

plants, prioritizing but not limited to indigenous and endemic species to the

This type of plant nursery having an extended area for growing,

grafting and transplanting stocks by selling in massive batches

at significantly lower prices to commercial farmers, government

agencies such as re-vegetation, parts and environmental

landscaping private estates and also to the other smallish

nurseries.

• Bamboo is a fast-growing and hardy species with a woody
culm. Bamboo is beneficial to environmental and land
management, providing fast-growing cover for denuded and
deforested areas, soil erosion check, and assists in stabilizing
road embankments. Research is now being done to see the
role of bamboo in carbon sequestration efforts.

PLANT NURSERIES UNDER BPI
The Philippines' Bureau of Plant Industry, (Filipino: Kawanihan ng Paghahalaman,

abbreviated as BPI) is an agency of the Philippine government under the Department of

Agriculture responsible for serving and supporting the Philippine plant industry sector.

BPI has the primary tasks of:

 Promoting the development of plant industries through research and development;

 Crop production,

 Crop protection, and

 Effective technology promotion and transfer.
