“2D MAX REVENUE”

Deborah Paula Dazo | Goupil 9

Jesse Robredo Coliseum
Problem Statement:
The tickets are sold for 32 pesos each. There are 11, 900 people willing to buy them at that price
since there are 11, 900 available seats in the coliseum; however, for every 5 pesos increase in
the price, there are 1200 fewer people willing to buy the tickets. What selling price produce the
maximum revenue and what will the maximum revenue be?

Revenue Function:
R (x) = Ticket price * Number of ticket sold

When the ticket price is 32 pesos there are 11, 900 people willing to buy them.
R (x) = (32)(11, 900)
R (x) = 380, 800

But for every 5 pesos increase in price, there is also 1,200 persons decrease in sales.
R (x) = (32 + 5) (11, 900 – 1,200) = (37)(10,700)
R (x) = 395, 900

If x = 42, then R (x) = (42) [11, 900 – 1200 (2)]

R (x) = (42) [11, 900 – 2, 400]
R (x) = (42) [9, 500]
= 399, 000
X 32 37 42
R (x) 380, 800 395, 900 399,
000

Standard Form: ax2 + bx + c = R (x)

At x = 42, then y = a (42)2 + b(42) + c = 399, 000 Eq. 1
At x = 37, then y = a (37)2 + b(37) + c = 395, 900 Eq. 2
At x = 32, then y = a (32)2 + b(32) + c = 380, 800 Eq. 3

Eq. 1 – Eq. 2 = Eq. 4 Eq. 4 – Eq. 5 = Eq. 6

1, 764a + 42b + c = 399, 000 eq. 1 395a + 5b = 3, 100 eq. 4
1, 369a + 37b + c = 395, 900 eq. 2 345a + 5b = 15, 900 eq. 5
395a + 5b = 3, 100 eq. 4 50a = -12, 800 eq. 6

Eq. 2 – Eq. 3 = Eq. 5 Solve for a in Eq. 6

1, 369a + 37b + c = 395, 900 eq. 2 50a = -12, 800
1, 024a + 32b + c = 380, 000 eq. 3 a = -256
345a + 5b = 15, 900 eq. 5
Substitute a = - 256 in Eq. 4 or 5
345 (-256) + 56 = 15, 900 eq. 5
- 88, 320 + 5b = 15, 900
5b = 104, 220
b = 20, 844

Substitute a = (-256) and b = 20, 844 in eq. 1, 2, or 3

1, 369a + 37b + c = 395, 900
1, 369(-256) + 37(20,844) = 395, 900
- 350, 464 + 771, 228 = 395, 900
c = 420, 764 – 395, 900
c = 24, 864

Revenue Function: a = -256 , b = 20, 844 , c = 24, 864

Using Revenue Function: R (x) = ax2 + bx + c

R (x) = -256x2 + 20, 844x + 24, 864
Using this function you can now complete the table below.
If x = 47, then R(x) -256 (47)2 + 20, 844 (47) + 24, 864 = 439, 028
If x = 52, then R(x) -256 (52)2 + 20, 844 (52) + 24, 864 = 312, 308
If x = 57, then R(x) -256 (57)2 + 20, 844 (57) + 24, 864 = 381, 228
If x = 62, then R(x) -256 (62)2 + 20, 844 (62) + 24, 864 = 333, 128
If x = 67, then R(x) -256 (67)2 + 20, 844 (62) + 24, 864 = 272, 228

x 32 37 42 47 52 57 62 67
R(x) 380, 800 395, 900 399, 000 439, 028 312, 308 381, 228 333, 272, 228

The Maximum ticket price is 47 pesos.

The Maximum revenue is 439, 028
